US Open 2017: Roger Federer couldn’t be happier with comfortable win over Feliciano Lopez

The Swiss tennis legend’s 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 win was his first straight sets victory of the tournament.

Prior to his clash with the Spaniard at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, he had to endure two difficult five-set opening matches against Frances Tiafoe and Mikhail Youzhny.

But after just one hour and 46 minutes he sunk Lopez, who has now lost to Federer 13 times in a row, to book his place in the last 16.

And the world No. 3 was delighted with his smooth-running performance at Flushing Meadows.

Federer said: “I’m very happy. It’s always a great feeling playing out here, usually I play very well.

“I struggled the first couple of rounds, but that had something to do with my opponents as well.

“I think I played a very clean match tonight, I couldn’t be happier.

“To win in straight sets against Feliciano, who’s been such a tough competitor over the years, is such a great feeling.”

Up next for Federer is a clash with Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The German won in straight sets himself against Australian John Millman.
