Prior to his clash with the Spaniard at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, he had to endure two difficult five-set opening matches against Frances Tiafoe and Mikhail Youzhny.
But after just one hour and 46 minutes he sunk Lopez, who has now lost to Federer 13 times in a row, to book his place in the last 16.
And the world No. 3 was delighted with his smooth-running performance at Flushing Meadows.
