‘Our last hope!’ Nigel Farage BACKS Merkel to SAVE Brexit talks in shock announcement

Angela Merkel, who has been remarkably quiet during the Brexit talks, faces her election rival Martin Schulz this evening in a TV debate.

The debate takes place just three weeks before German voters go to the polls and decide on whether to hand Mrs Merkel a fourth consecutive term as chancellor.

During his Sunday LBC radio show, Nigel Farage shocked some supporters by saying Mrs Merkel is the best – and last – hope to save the Brexit talks.

Mr Farage said Britain could soon walk away from negotiations following this week’s strained talks between Brexit Secretary David Davis and his EU counterpart Michel Barnier.

Both Jean-Claude Juncker and Mr Barnier have been vocal in their harsh criticism of the British Brexit negotiation team.

Speaking on LBC, the former Ukip leader said Mrs Merkel, who he acknowledged was “fanatical about the EU”, was the only hope Britain had against crashing out without a deal.

The MEP said: “My feeling is she is a pragmatist, and probably the most positive leader in the European Union towards finding a sensible solution.

“She has been solid dependable and reliable. There is an economic logic to her.

“I hope she will listen to the voice of German business, think of German jobs, and knock heads together with Juncker and Barnier.

“If there is any hope in saving Brexit talks, it lies with her.”

Mr Farage said Mrs Merkel has been staying quiet because of the election, but once that is over, she will “get back in the ring and shake things up”.

One caller named John added to this: “I don’t like her politics but I think it is in Britain’s best interest to have Merkel back – she represents the business lobby. “

Despite this, EU officials have taken measures to prevent Theresa May from holding talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about trade relationships.

A Sky News report yesterday suggested that Britain would navigate around Mr Barnier to start trade talks with Ms Merkel.
