Italian Grand Prix 2017 LIVE: Lewis Hamilton on pole, Sebastian Vettel starts fifth

The Italian track is Ferrari’s home race but Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen could not get their cars working in the wet during Saturday’s qualifying.

After grid penalties for the Red Bulls, they start the Italian Grand Prix in fifth and sixth.

Lewis Hamilton, who trails Vettel by seven points in the F1 World Drivers’ Championship, broke Michael Schumacher’s all-time pole record by producing the fastest lap in the rain and will re-take the lead in the title race with a win.

  • Nine drivers take grid penalties to give Lance Stroll chance to start from front row
  • Grid: 1st Hamilton, 2nd Stroll, 3rd Ocon, 4th Bottas, 5th Raikkonen, 6th Vettel.

Italian Grand Prix 2017 LIVE – Latest updates from Monza

12.45pm: One of the stories of yesterday was the performance of Lance Stroll, who qualified in fourth and is up to second thanks to grid penalties for the Red Bulls.

“He’s had a really good weekend even without what he did yesterday,” said head of vehicle performance at Williams Rob Smedley.

“He’s got some really quick cars around him – probably quicker than us – but we’ve got to think about where we are in the championship.

“We’ll be going for the podium though!”

12.30pm: The best news of the day is that the sun is shining! We won’t be sitting around watching a safety car and a tractor tool around the Monza circuit deciding whether to let our 20 brave heroes go racing.

What that does mean is that managing tyre temperatures will be the most important part of the race. If you can look after your tyres, this is a classic one-stop.

But there are some strategy intricacies. Yesterday’s wet qualifying means the whole grid has free choice of what compound to start on – Ferrari would probably prefer to start on a harder tyre but given both cars have to get past three Mercedes-power cars before they even get to Hamilton, missing out on the early boost of a super-soft tyre could be too much to bear.

Either way, with so many displaced cars on the grid, this could be a very exciting couple of hours.
