Italian Grand Prix 2017: Practice 3 begins after heavy rain delays action at Monza

Practice 3 of the Italian Grand Prix was delayed this morning was water streamed over the track.

Fans had flocked to the Monza circuit to watch the practice session ahead of qualifying this afternoon.

But it was only at 10.44am that the drivers got out.

Earlier in the morning race director Charlie Whiting had told the BBC: “We looked at it at 09:50 BST and felt it was definitely not safe, a lot of aquaplaning, especially on the back straight, the risk of aquaplaning is very high.”

McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne had said: “There is so much water on the track and with rivers on the track and standing water we have too much aquaplaning and we don’t want to damage our cars going into qualifying. There’s no point taking risks now.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was fastest in P1 yesterday under decent weather conditions in north-west Milan.

But his team-mate Valtteri Bottas set the best time in P2.

Discussing the race yesterday, Hamilton said: “I have in the past felt that I was in the enemy’s back garden in Monza.

“But I would say that for the last four or five years I’ve had such a great welcome here, even from the Ferrari fans.

“Every time I come I feel at home. I love it here. When you turn up and see the fans at the gate, there’s a lot of Ferrari fans there but at least 50 per cent of them say ‘Forza Ferrari, come to Ferrari’. It’s a compliment.”
