Hurricane Harvey: Babies airlifted from hospital hit by floods

The newborn babies, all being cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, Texas, were evacuated to other hospitals because it has no running water.

The mercy flight took place as the death toll from Hurricane Harvey reached at least 44, with 19 more still missing. More than a million residents have now been displaced by the flooding.

The city of Beaumont was turned into an island with no piped water after pumps were knocked out.

The US Army Corps of Engineers battled to restore them as the babies – and dozens of other patients – were evacuated.

Some of the children’s parents flew with them, but others were trapped in their own homes.

Dr Snehal Doshi said: “We’re calling them every couple of hours… and reassuring them we’ll take care of their babies.”

US President is set to visit Texas again today for a second time after promising $1million of his own money, plus $5.9 billion aid.
