North Korea releases new photos of ballistic missile launched over Japan amid WW3 fears

The missile was launched from Sunan, close to the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, and flew around 1,680 miles (2,700km).

Experts believe it to be the first which is powerful enough to potentially carry a nuclear warhead.

Photos released from the tension-escalating incident show Kim Jong-un overseeing the launch which occurred on Tuesday morning.

After flying over Japan’s northernmost main island the missile broke into three pieces before falling into the sea around 733miles (1,180km) off the east coast of Japan.

Japan did not try to shoot down the missile but issued a warning telling citizens in Hokkaido to take shelter in “a sturdy building or basement”.

The latest launch comes after the despot fired three missiles on Saturday towards the Sea of Japan, that either failed in flight or exploded almost immediately.

US Pacific Command from its Hawaii headquarters said: “The first and third missiles at 11.49am (10.49pm BST) and 12.19pm (11.19pm BST) failed in flight.

“The second missile launch at 12.07pm (11.07pm BST) appears to have blown up almost immediately.”

Earlier the US has revealed its army is ready to attack North Korea if necessary.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered a show of “overwhelming” force in response to the launch and four South Korean jets staged a live bombing drill on Tuesday.

Mr Moon’s chief press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, confirmed the drill was ordered by the South Korean military after an urgent National Security Council meeting.

He added: “We assessed North Korea’s provocations as extremely severe and decided to maintain a vigilant posture in preparation for the possibility of additional provocations by North Korea.”

North Korea’s ambassador to the UN claims his country has “every reason” to continue ramping up war tensions as he accused the US of driving the Korean peninsula towards an “explosion”.

The secretive state earlier this month revealed plans to launch four IRBM towards US-territory Guam.

Following the announcement Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera announced his nation would be allowed to hit a missile headed towards the US Pacific territory if it was judged to be an existential threat to Japan.

Kim Jong-un later held back the planned launch – which would have been schedule for mid-August – but an expert has warned that North Korea could still strike the US territory in a show of might against Donald Trump.

Dr John Nilsson-Wright downplayed the idea that North Korea would directly strike Guam, but insisted he would not rule it out.

The senior research fellow at the Chatham House Asia Programme said: “I don’t think the North Korean’s have ever been thinking about a direct attack on Guam despite their very provocative rhetoric.

“A more plausible scenario is a potential test fire of a missile in the direction of Guam to show that the North Koreans have that capability.

“But I wouldn’t rule it out in the future, if they feel, as they already are, emboldened. If they feel they are approaching if you like nuclear superpower status as a result of their progress in recent months. Then they might be willing to take that extra risk.”
