People’s princess: Our selection of books remembering Diana

Remembering Diana: A Life In Photographs Foreword by Tina Brown (National Geographic, £20)

In her introduction to this sumptuous new collection of photographs, Tina Brown writes an impassioned essay about Diana’s courage, humility and compassion as well as her multiple heartbreaks: “It is another of the great ironies of Diana’s life that everyone was in love with her except her husband.”

The chronologically arranged photographs range from Diana aged three to a month before her death aged 36. A beautifully produced coffee table book.

Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words by Andrew Morton (Michael O’Mara, £20)

The 20th anniversary of Diana’s death has produced numerous reissues of books about her life, not least Andrew Morton’s controversial biography.

First published in June 1992 when Diana was still married to Prince Charles, it was only after the death of the Princess that Morton revealed the source of his material: audio tapes that she had recorded and given to him.

The updated version contains new material from the tapes including, for the first time, unedited transcripts of the recordings as well as an assessment of Diana’s legacy and her enduring impact on the Royal Family.

Diana: The People’s Princess by Nicholas Owen with a foreword by Sir Trevor McDonald(Carlton Publishing, £20)

This reissue comes with an updated section on Diana’s legacy. Nicholas Owen’s revealing book was first published in 1997, just months after Diana’s death.

Although the photographs are numerous, it’s not as glossily produced as the National Geographic book but will still delight Diana fans.

Diana: I’m Going To Be Me – The People’s Princess Revealed In Her Own Words by Phil Dampier (Barzipan Publishing, £8.95)

This collection of Diana’s public quotes is arranged into three sections: Before Charles (“I’d like to marry soon.

What woman doesn’t want to marry eventually?”), Marriage (“My husband knows so much about rearing children that I’ve suggested he has the next one and I’ll sit back and give advice”) and Separation And Beyond (“When you are happy you can forgive a great deal”). Satisfying the nation’s appetite for all things Diana-related, this is a timely insight into the life of the People’s Princess.e of the People’s Princess.
