North Korea news: World War 3 scares across Asia as Kim Jong-un fires missile over Japan

launched a missile over Japan before it crashed into the sea as part of Kim Jong-un’s ongoing flurry of weapons tests.

In a bid to avoid any escalation, Japan made no effort to shoot down the missile but issued safety warnings, telling residents to take shelter in a “sturdy building or basement”.

Warnings were issued across Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Niigata and Nagano

But public broadcaster NHK said there were no signs of damage from the rocket, which passed over Japanese territory at around 6:06am local time, according to Tokyo.

Amid a tense standoff between Pyongyang and Washington, US President said he received North Korea’s latest message “loud and clear”.

He added the “threatening” actions of North Korea would only add to the hermit nation’s isolation on the world stage.

The Kim regime’s latest missile test has left people across Asia fearing the start of World War 3.

Charlie Shin, a South Korean now living in the Philippines, warned any North Korean military action against his country would be enough to start a potentially catastrophic conflict.

The vice president of the United Korean Community Association in the Philippines told CNN: “If anything happens in my country they could be starting World War 3 – we can not say we are safer.

“We strongly condemn North Korea’s missile provocation.”

Alan Peter Cayetano, the Philippines’ secretary of foreign affairs, said in a statement: “We call on North Korea to halt these dangerous and privative actions, which heighten tensions, increase instability and the risk of miscalculation and could possibly endanger lives.

“Asian and the Philippines, as this year’s chair, remain committed to peaceful resolutions of conflict.

“While we are ready to do our part, provocations such as this latest missile launch should stop to help us put in place an environment that would be conducive for dialogue.”

Robert Kelly, an associate professor at Pusan National University, warned the latest round of tests were a signal from Pyongyang, hinting the Kim regime isn’t just content with striking the US.

Speaking to Bloomberg, he said: “I think the launch over Japan was the signal that North Korea could retaliate against Japanese civilians, as well as South Koreans and Americans.

“The news in the last couple of weeks is North Korea’s ability to strike the United States, and it’s been well known for a while that North Korea could do a great deal of damage to South Korea.

“This is North Korea’s way of saying we can also hit Japan, which hasn’t got so much press recently.”
