Simon Rimmer: My garden, Cups and San Diego – Five things I can’t live without

Here’s five things he can’t live without…

1 MY GARDEN

A couple of years ago we landscaped our garden and it has changed our lives as we now spend so much time out there.

We have some really comfortable furniture and a fire pit so we can keep warm and sit outside all year.

At this time of year it is so lovely to spend time in the garden with delicious summery food and an ice cold bottle of rosé.

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

My life is pretty full-on as I own 10 restaurants and am just about to start filming for Strictly Come Dancing so when I get the chance to kick back and relax, I take it.

2 COOKING APP

This is an Apple app called Cups that converts American cup measurements into their English equivalent and it is absolutely brilliant for baking and cooking.

I don’t think anyone really knows what an American cup size is and the app allows you to measure out your ingredients accurately without having to carry out complicated conversions.

There is a similar app available on Android called Cups Converter.

3 SAN DIEGO

We try to go to California every two years as it is a place we all love as a family, particularly San Diego which is the most amazing holiday destination.

Usually we stay in this beautiful little coastal town called Del Mar. It is right on the Pacific Ocean and not only does it have the most idyllic beaches but the balmy climate is perfect too.

Normally when I go on holiday it takes me at least four or five days to relax but the minute I arrive in Del Mar I unwind instantly.

It just seems to have this magical quality. San Diego has an amazing cultural vibe and the fresh food and meat are delicious, as are most of the restaurants there.

I can honestly say that if I could relocate my work, friends and family out to California, I would move there in a heartbeat.

Although having said that, the multi-million pound property prices might be a bit of an issue.

4 PESTLE AND MORTAR

I bought the most beautiful pestle and mortar in Thailand 21 years ago and I still use it today.

I’d be incredibly upset if it ever got broken. Before I became a chef I worked in the fashion industry so I really appreciate aesthetics and I like things to look good.

But my pestle and mortar doesn’t just look appealing, it is an incredibly useful tool as it is so heavy and has a ridged surface that really helps to grind the ingredients down.

I have used it so much over the years that it always exudes this enchanting scent of sweetness and spice.

5 CHILLIES

I love spicy food and if I’m looking for inspiration then chillies are always my go-to ingredient.

I don’t think you can beat a homemade vindaloo with lots of spice or aromatic pulled pork.

My passion for cooking seems to go through many fashions and phases.

At the moment I am really obsessed with wholegrains but a while ago it was all about slow cooking.

What I enjoy so much about being a chef is there is always something new to try.
