An online pharmacy is planning to dispatch medicines and the contraceptive nationwide.

Bosses at MedExpress are in talks with watchdog the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.

Dwayne D’Souza, managing director, says the deliveries will be particularly useful for people living in remote areas.

The trial saw the morning after pill delivered in Broadstairs, Kent, under controlled conditions.

Part of the test was to see if the medication could be delivered safely after being kept in optimal conditions to prevent it being affected by temperature.

The pill was carried at below 25C.

Mr D’Souza said while it may take time for the system to gain regulatory approval, his company is keen to use drones for medical deliveries as soon as possible.

He said: “The rise of artificial intelligence, along with autonomous delivery and other sophisticated technologies, provides ample opportunity for businesses such as MedExpress to trial a range of convenient customer service options.”

He added: “We were very pleased with how the trial went. We’re considering making drone delivery part of our future service and are in talks to work out how we can do this.

“We’re confident our customers will love the idea.”
