Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 camera can do something the iPhone can’t

fans were finally treated to earlier this week as the Korean technology firm unveiled its all-new phablet.

This giant 6.3-inch phone arrives almost a year after its predecessor was sensationally pulled from sale due to a battery defect that caused the device to overheat.

Samsung says they’ve put these issues firmly behind them with the new Note 8 set to reboot this popular franchise.

Along with its new curved Infinity display, owners will be treated to a refreshed and more accurate S Pen, which is now waterproof, and the latest octa-core processor.

The Note also features 64GB of expandable memory and can be charged wirelessly.

But perhaps one of the most exciting features coming to the Note 8 is its new dual-lens camera.

Samsung was expected to launch a double camera on its S8 and many were surprised when a single snapper was revealed back in March.

Apple has had a dual-lens camera on its iPhone for almost a year and it’s been surprising to see how long its taken Samsung to finally catch up.

However, although it’s been a long time coming, the Note 8’s dual-lens camera can do something the iPhone 7 Plus can’t.

Samsung has included two 12-megapixel cameras on the rear of the Note 8 with both featuring Optical Image Stabilisation.

The camera’s consist of a wide-angle and telephoto lens which allows the Note 8 to zoom and add DSLR-style depth of field to images.

This is nothing new as the iPhone’s Portrait Mode also offers the same effect but Samsung has added a neat trick which allows users to adjust the amount of blur the picture gets.

This Live Focus bokeh effect can even be tweaked or removed completely after the image has been taken – something you can’t do on the iPhone.

It’s worth noting that to give the Note 8 this ability, the device stores two copies of each photo – an original and the versions with the effect added.

The Note 8 also offers another feature called Dual Capture mode.

This allows both rear cameras to take two pictures simultaneously and allow you to save both images; one close-up shot from the telephoto lens and one wide-angle shot that shows the entire background.

Samsung is clearly pushing the boundaries of its already impressive camera but Apple is expected to fight back when it launches the new next month.

Samsung’s Note 8 can be pre-ordered now for £869 with devices arriving in September.
