Today is National Burger Day: Here are ten facts about this fast food favourite

1. Hamburgers take their name from Hamburg steak, which was a term first recorded in 1884 for fried flat balls of meat. 

2. It turned from Hamburg steak to Hamburger steak, then just hamburger and finally burger, which was first recorded in 1939. 

3. Beefburger and porkburger followed rapidly, but vegeburger was not seen until 1945. 

4. Turtleburger (1946), mooseburger (1948) and soyaburger (1953) were later additions. 

5. Fifty billion burgers a year are eaten in the USA, which works out at an average of three a week for the average person (including all ages).

6. The record for eating a nine-pound Big Daddy cheeseburger is 27min 0sec, set by Sonya Thomas in 2006. 

7. Sonya Thomas also holds the record for eating seven 3/4 pound “Thickburgers” in 10min… 

8. …but Joey Chestnut holds the record for two-and-a-half inch Krystalburgers at 103 in 8 minutes. 

9. A Dutch chef this year set a record for the most expensive burger at 2,000 Euros (£1,785). 

10. The Heart Attack Grill, Las Vegas has the most calorific burger, called the “Quadruple Bypass”.
