The world’s 10 best cities to live in Europe revealed – UK fails to make list

Importance Score: 55 / 100 🔵

A recent ranking of the world’s most liveable cities features four from Europe, but the UK is not among them. The Global Liveability Index, compiled annually by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), evaluates cities based on factors such as infrastructure, environment, stability, healthcare, and education. This report is a valuable tool for understanding global quality of life.

Global Liveability Index: Top Cities Announced

The Economist’s sister organization analyzed 173 cities globally to create a top 10 list of the most liveable cities. The list, released recently, names Copenhagen, the Danish capital, as the leading city with an overall score of 98. This high ranking is attributed to exceptional performance in areas like stability, infrastructure, and education, each scoring a perfect 100, according to a report by MailOnline.

The Nordic city improved upon its already impressive second-place position from the preceding year’s analysis.

Vienna, the Austrian capital, and Zurich, a Swiss city, shared second place with a score of 97.1.

Melbourne, Australia, secured fourth place, followed by another Swiss city, Geneva, in fifth.

Two additional Australian cities, Sydney and Adelaide, appeared on the EIU’s list in sixth and ninth place, respectively.

Only one Asian metropolis made it into the top 10: Osaka, the Japanese port city, which tied for seventh place with Auckland in New Zealand.

Rounding out the list at tenth place is Toronto, Canada.

Key Findings of the Global Liveability Report

According to a press statement highlighting the study, the average global liveability score for 2024 remains unchanged from the previous year, holding steady at 76.1 out of 100. However, the EIU noted that the results “reflect a continued decline in global stability, spurred by intensifying geopolitical conflict and social unrest.”

Barsali Bhattacharyya, the organization’s deputy industry director, stated, “Global liveability has remained flat over the past year, and as in 2024, scores for stability have declined at a global level.”

“As in 2024, stability scores have declined for western Europe and the Middle East and North Africa. In this edition, they have also declined for Asia, amid intensified threats of military conflict for cities in India and Taiwan.”

UK Cities Decline in Rankings

All UK cities included in the report—London, Manchester, and Edinburgh—have experienced a drop in their rankings, which the EIU suggests is linked to increasing homelessness and recent disturbances.

The UK failed to secure a spot in the top 10, with London, Manchester, and Edinburgh all slipping in the rankings compared to last year.

London and Manchester both declined by nine places, landing at 54th and 52nd, respectively, while Edinburgh fell five places to 64th.

The EIU attributes this downturn to “widespread disturbances and augmented levels of homelessness.”
