South Korea to Address Chip Concerns in U.S. Trade Talks
South Korea’s chief trade negotiator stated on Sunday that he intends to address apprehensions regarding potential U.S. limitations on semiconductor manufacturers operating in China. This discussion is slated to occur during his upcoming meetings with U.S. officials in Washington this week. These meetings constitute the third round of technical discussions within the broader tariff negotiations between the two nations. The discussions aim to address challenges faced by South Korean chipmakers amidst evolving global trade policies.
Concerns Over U.S. Policy Impact on Chipmakers
“I will convey the concerns prevalent within the industry and exercise the greatest caution,” remarked South Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo to journalists prior to his departure for Washington. He was responding to inquiries regarding fears that the U.S. might implement policies that could impede the operations of foreign chipmakers in China.
Possible Extension of Trade Talk Deadline
Yeo also suggested that Seoul might not adhere strictly to the initial July deadline for reaching a trade agreement. He indicated that discussions could extend beyond July 8, considering the prevailing political and economic ambiguities in the U.S.

Background on Trade Negotiations
South Korea is currently subject to a general 10% tariff, along with a 25% country-specific duty that is temporarily suspended for 90 days. During their initial round of trade talks in late April, South Korea and the U.S. agreed to formulate a trade agreement aimed at reducing existing tariffs by July 8. Key aspects of the negotiations are:
- Potential U.S. restrictions on chipmakers in China.
- The initial deadline of July 8 for a trade agreement.
- Washington’s request for South Korea to ease regulations on U.S. beef imports.
Minister’s Broader Engagement in Washington
Yeo, appointed earlier this month by President Lee Jae Myung, stated during his campaign that there was no pressing need to expedite a trade agreement with the United States.
Additional Trade Discussions
On Sunday, Yeo added that he plans to engage with officials from the White House and the U.S. Congress to address various trade matters. These discussions will include Washington’s request for South Korea to ease regulations on imports of U.S. beef, reflecting a comprehensive approach to bilateral trade relations.
