Lazzat runs home and then runs free in Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot

Importance Score: 20 / 100 šŸ”µ

The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot produced a thrilling race, followed by a memorable aftermath. Lazzat, the victorious 9-2 shot, created a spectacle by galloping riderless across the track for approximately 15 minutes following the race. This unexpected display delayed the trophy presentations after the horse unseated his jockey, James Doyle, soon after passing the finish line.

Royal Ascot Drama: Lazzat’s Unscheduled Gallop

Reflecting on the incident, Doyle remarked, “I did apologise to the king and queen when I went to collect my prize, and said I should have stayed in Pony Club a bit longer than I did. We had a good laugh about that.”

Doyle had already enjoyed a successful Royal Ascot meeting, securing three victories for Wathnan Racing, his principal employer. However, clinching a Group One win with Lazzat, a recent acquisition by Wathnan, elevated his week to new heights.

Lazzat’s Winning Strategy

Lazzat initiated a swift start, leading a group of ten horses racing centrally on the course. Despite a strong challenge from the favored Satono Reve, ridden by JoĆ£o ā€œMagic Manā€ Moreira, in the final furlong, Lazzat maintained a half-length advantage at the finish. Flora Of Bermuda, another recent purchase by Wathnan, finished third, three lengths behind.

“It’s been an amazing week and that has capped it off,” exclaimed Richard Brown, Wathnan’s racing manager. “What an amazing horse race, he’s locked up with the Japanese horse and they’ve gone a long way clear in a six-furlong sprint. That was an absolutely phenomenal race to watch.”

Brown added, “When you saw him [Satono Reve] come in, he’s a monster walking round here but that is a very, very brave performance. That’s two brilliant rides from James from the front.” Notably, Doyle had previously triumphed in the Chesham Stakes aboard Humidity.

Japan’s Quest for Royal Ascot Victory Continues

Japan’s search for their first Royal Ascot win remains unfulfilled. Satono Reve delivered a commendable performance, finishing just half a length behind Lazzat. However, the horse raced with a group of five contenders near the inside rail, while Lazzat commanded a larger contingent in the track’s center. A more favorable position might have altered the outcome.

Rebel’s Romance Secures Victory in Hardwicke Stakes

Charlie Appleby ended a run of 37 losses at the Royal Ascot meeting, dating back to 2022, when Rebel’s Romance took to the track for the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes. Rebel’s Romance, a dependable and accomplished horse, secured a one-and-three-quarter-length victory over Al Riffa.

William Buick guided Rebel’s Romance to the front more than a furlong from the finish line. The seven-time Group One victor maintained a strong pace to the end. The horse is now set to compete for an eighth Group One title in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, aiming to surpass Ā£11 million in prize money.

Appleby’s Sentiments on Rebel’s Romance

“I’ve got a picture of this fellow on my bedside table, he means that much to us all,” Appleby shared. “Full credit to the horse first and foremost, and full credit to all the team. It has been a tough week and that is what you expect when you come here. It is the Olympics. You can come here thinking you are fully loaded and have great chances, and you can walk away with excuses, but that’s racing.”

“If I was coming into the last day with my last roll of the dice, he was the horse that we needed. It was a fantastic ride by William, and once he kicked for home, I knew it would take a good one to get past him. We’ve seen so often before that he’s a battler, and if something comes to him, he finds again. As it happened, they didn’t get close enough.”

“It’s been a great week for Godolphin [with winners for the John Gosden and Saeed bin Suroor stables] and I’m just glad I’ve got the monkey off my back there. It’s a tough week, but it’s a week you’ve got to enjoy because I know how hard it is to get horses here. To win with them is just a bonus.”

Future Plans for Rebel’s Romance

As a gelding, Rebel’s Romance has an extended racing future. Following the King George, the seven-year-old will likely target becoming the first three-time champion of the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

“He’s kept the whole yard afloat this week and you just don’t come across these horses often in your career,” Appleby concluded. “He’s our stable favourite and always will be.”

Royal Ascot’s Leading Figures

Ryan Moore, who secured victory on Sober in the Queen Alexandra Stakes, concluded the Royal Ascot meeting as the leading jockey for an impressive 12th time, racking up seven wins. John & Thady Gosden shared the trainers’ award with Aidan O’Brien, thanks to having one more runner-up finish.

The O’Brien or Gosden stable has claimed the trainers’ title at the past 11 Royal Ascot meetings.
