Character.AI, the Google-supported AI chatbot platform boasting tens of millions of active monthly users, revealed on Friday that Karandeep Anand, formerly VP of Business Products at Meta, is joining the organization as Chief Executive Officer. This move underscores the ever-evolving landscape of AI chatbot companies and the critical roles leadership plays in navigating growth and responsibility.
Karandeep Anand Appointed CEO of Character.AI
Anand, who previously served as a board advisor to Character.AI, assumes the CEO position at a crucial juncture for the chatbot provider. The company is endeavoring to simultaneously expand its platform while addressing concerns regarding child safety and chatbot security. Recently, Character.AI has implemented several new security mechanisms in response to an ongoing lawsuit alleging that one of its chatbots contributed to the death of a 14-year-old boy in Florida.
An Experienced Leader
Anand brings to Character.AI extensive experience in overseeing advertising products that reached billions of users across Meta’s applications. Before that, he served as Microsoft’s head of product management, managing user experience for the company’s cloud platform, Azure. Most recently, Anand was the president of the financial technology startup Brex.

Anand’s appointment comes just over 10 months after Google recruited Character.AI’s co-founder and former CEO, Noam Shazeer. Shazeer had previously headed critical AI teams at the Mountain View firm. At the same time, Google also entered into a non-exclusive agreement to utilize Character.AI’s technology—a significant step toward enhancing AI chatbot capabilities.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Funding
Character.AI’s arrangement with Google triggered an investigation by federal regulators into potential antitrust issues between the two organizations. This is one of several reverse-acquihire transactions in the AI startup sector facing increased regulatory oversight, including Microsoft’s deal with Inflection.AI.
Character.AI has secured over $150 million in venture capital, primarily from Andreessen Horowitz. This funding aids the company in continuous innovation of its AI chatbot platform.
Anand’s Vision for Character.AI
According to a blog post, Anand stated that one of his immediate priorities is to make safety filters “less overbearing.” The new CEO emphasized the company’s dedication to user protection but acknowledged that “the app filters things that are perfectly harmless” too often. This highlights the challenge of balancing AI chatbot safety with user experience.
Anand also outlined plans to enhance the caliber of AI models on Character.AI’s platform, innovate around memory functionalities, and increase transparency in decision-making processes. He indicated that many of these improvements are anticipated to be rolled out within the next two months, improving the performance of the AI chatbot service.
The Growing Popularity of Entertainment Chatbots
Chatbots designed primarily for entertainment, a niche in which Character.AI specializes, are evolving into a significant market for generative AI, surprisingly to many observers. According to data from Sensor Tower, in 2024, 66% of the company’s users were between 18 and 24 years old, and 72% of its users were women. This demographic data sheds light on the widespread appeal of the AI chatbot within younger and female audiences.
