BBC star issues health update after horror near-death crash

Importance Score: 45 / 100 🔵

BBC Radio personality Billy Reeves has shared his experiences living with the lasting effects of a severe car crash that nearly ended his life two decades ago. The BBC Radio London travel and sports correspondent spent half a year in recovery after the vehicle he was driving, with his friend James as a passenger, suffered a head-on impact at 99mph by teenage joyriders fleeing from law enforcement. This incident occurred in September 2001, a mere nine days after he orchestrated the inaugural show for the then-unknown band The Darkness at a club night he hosted in Kings Cross.

Reflecting on Health and Well-being After a Near-Fatal Accident

In an exclusive conversation, Reeves reflected on his current state of well-being leading up to his 60th birthday, conceding that he continues to grapple with the ramifications of the crash.

Physical Challenges and Coping Mechanisms

“Assessing my health is peculiar, as I can stand, walk, and manage basic functions. There were times in the hospital when I needed assistance with bodily functions,” Reeves explained.

  • “My digestive system is unpredictable, requiring careful dietary choices and supplements.
  • My condition is ‘intestinal hurry’, which is disconcerting. I’m unsure of its progression with age, but it’s a burden I must accept.”

“I have limited function in my arm, about 20% use, and significant pain,” he noted, illustrating his range of motion after multiple shoulder surgeries. “Constant pain accompanies movement, stemming from stiffness due to inactivity. It’s a consequence of my own doing.”

The Power of Mental Fortitude

“(But overall) my health is fine because it’s all up here,” he said pointing to his head. “It’s all mental – which I know sounds dreadful, if anybody’s reading this thinking, ‘well I’ve got seeping sores, and I can’t go out the house’. You can’t say, ‘Well, you can, because it’s all mental’. But it is how I feel,” Billy added.

“My health is positive because my mental state is strong. Before the incident, my mental health was poor. I had to relearn how to walk. I was immobile, lying on my back for several weeks. Muscles deteriorate rapidly. I still need to concentrate to avoid falling, which has happened repeatedly.”

Overcoming Trauma and Rediscovering Passion

The Mind-Body Connection in Healing

Reeves emphasized, “I believe it’s largely mental, as pain is a response, your brain signaling an issue. I learned early on to override that signaling.”

He has no memory of the crash itself, which reduced the car to a “crushed bean can,” or its immediate aftermath, a blessing he acknowledges. His wife experienced PTSD from seeing him in the hospital and sought therapy.

Unearthing Lost Music and Reigniting Creativity

His recollection is also absent regarding two mini discs discovered in a box of possessions from the night of the crash, unopened for two decades until the Covid lockdowns. At the time of the crash, his music career was gaining momentum. He had signed with Sony as a solo artist after creating and writing songs for Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s band Theaudience in 1996. He doesn’t recall the songs or their intended purpose.

New Album Release

These forgotten tracks have been revived by a producer friend and feature on a new solo project, When Lord God Almighty Reads The News, released on Friday June 6, the day before his 60th birthday. Many tracks feature his original demo vocals, and the process has rekindled his passion for music, despite the oddity of hearing his songs on Radio 6. “Whatever I was thinking then when I wrote those songs has now come to fruition,” he said.

Billy Reeves’ album When Lord God Almighty Reads The News is out now.
