Tennis icon Andy Murray recently critiqued a prestigious Wimbledon tradition, describing it as “s***e.” The former world No. 1, known for his candidness, once famously stopped at McDonald’s in his tuxedo on his way to the Wimbledon champions’ dinner. This stemmed from a hunger sparked by rigorous matches and extensive press obligations. He wanted to celebrate his Wimbledon win differently.
Murray’s Critique of Wimbledon Champions’ Dinner
Judy Murray, Andy’s mother, explained that her son was famished after a demanding match and numerous press interviews following his initial 2013 Wimbledon victory over Novak Djokovic. The Wimbledon champion needed sustenance.
“The players’ restaurant was closed, so there wasn’t any food available, not just for Andy but for anyone. He was starving,” Judy revealed.

During “Centre Stage,” a series of live events in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London where he shares personal career anecdotes, Andy conveyed his desire to commemorate his maiden Wimbledon triumph with those closest to him.
However, he was required to attend the customary champions’ dinner at the InterContinental Park Lane hotel in London, a 90-minute trip from the All England Club.
Arriving at 11:30 p.m., he humorously recalled his experience, noting he couldn’t even sit with his parents or his now-wife, Kim Sears, stating, “Yeah, it was s***e.”
Unconventional Celebrations: McDonald’s and More
Previously, Murray confessed that he remembers little from the 2013 final match and felt more “relief” than jubilation after securing the win.
Addressing 3,000 fans, the celebrated athlete shared that he celebrated his 2016 Wimbledon victory, achieved against Canadian Milos Raonic in straight sets after two hours and 47 minutes, in a unique manner.
Concerning this win, his last in a Grand Slam, he revealed that he stopped at a McDonald’s en route to the champions’ dinner, still dressed in his tuxedo.
A Drive-Through Encounter
Judy Murray recounted with amusement how the drive-through employees were stunned when Andy collected his order in evening attire, saying: “They were asking, ‘Is that Andy Murray? No, it can’t be.'”
Andy admitted that he capped off the night at a nightclub and “had an accident” in the taxi on his way home.
