Elliot Anderson finishes off Spain as England Under-21s reach Euros’ last four

Lee Carsley highlighted this week that consecutive European Under-21 Championship triumphs could elevate the standing of British coaches and the young England squad. Their commanding quarter-final victory against Spain, the pre-tournament favorites seeking retribution, undoubtedly bolstered both.

England U21s Aim for Back-to-Back European Titles

After a challenging group stage, England, fielding one of the youngest squads in Slovakia, secured a quarter final victory. Goals from James McAtee and Harvey Elliott, with their club futures uncertain, alongside a late penalty from Elliot Anderson, secured another victory for Carsley against the same Spanish side they overcame in the 2023 final. Facing the Netherlands in Wednesday’s semi-final in Bratislava, Carsley is now two games away from equaling Dave Sexton’s achievement of winning the competition in 1982 and 1984.

“In the first half we were so good,” Carsley noted. “The big thing is this can’t be our final – there’s better nights to come.”

Tensions Flare as England Frustrate Spain

Spain has become a frequent opponent for England in the later stages of youth tournaments. Santi Denia, the sole remaining figure from Spain’s coaching staff following the ill-tempered 2023 final – which saw red cards issued to both sides – witnessed similar scenes in Trnava as tensions ignited between the benches. These altercations reflected England’s success in stifling Spain after Javi Guerra’s penalty had narrowed the deficit late in the first half.

“There was a major difference from start to finish: we were disciplined and compact,” asserted Elliott, one of only two players (along with Charlie Cresswell) remaining from the 2023 victory in Georgia. “We trusted in our own ability. The football was incredible; we need to carry a lot from this into the next game.”

Key Moments and Tactical Shifts

England initially appeared vulnerable, with Diego López heading over from close range in the opening minutes. Referee Simone Sozza initially awarded Spain a penalty after López’s powerful shot struck Cresswell’s arm. However, the video assistant referee (VAR) intervened, overturning the decision to the relief of the Toulouse defender.

McAtee’s Opener Sparks England

This moment proved to be the catalyst England needed. McAtee, likely to depart Manchester City this summer after being permitted to participate in the tournament instead of traveling to the Club World Cup, exhibited his scoring prowess by reacting quickest after Spain faltered in clearing Alex Scott’s corner.

Quansah and Elliott Combine for Second

Jarell Quansah orchestrated the second goal after Birmingham’s Jay Stansfield, leading the attack as one of four changes from the loss to Germany, instigated a loose pass. Quansah, reportedly close to a £30m move to Bayer Leverkusen, surged forward and unleashed a shot that was poorly saved, allowing Elliott to convert the rebound. This goal put England firmly in control.

Spain’s Comeback Attempt and England’s Response

Spain looked stunned. Scott’s risky pass led to Quansah fouling Alberto Moleiro. Guerra converted the resulting penalty. This gave Spain a lifeline.

England began the second half determined to complete the job, but Stansfield’s touch let him down after more good work by Quansah, and his shot deflected over. Cresswell then headed a corner narrowly wide. A dangerous cross fizzed across England’s six-yard box, but Cresswell cleared acrobatically.

Spain continued pressing for an equalizer. Jack Hinshelwood missed a free header to settle Carsley’s nerves, directing Anderson’s cross over the bar. Finally, substitute Jonathan Rowe was fouled by Alejandro Iturbe late in injury time, and Anderson calmly converted the resulting penalty. This was then followed by a confrontation that required officials to separate members from both coaching staffs.
