Fans value the memories. Two decades after HBO first introduced viewers to the beloved sitcom “The Comeback,” starring Lisa Kudrow, speculation arises about a potential Season 3. Kudrow, now 61, portrayed Valerie Cherish, a sitcom veteran fiercely determined to revitalize her career. News about the possibility of another season of The Comeback has generated considerable buzz.
Could “The Comeback” Return?
The initial season aired in 2005, followed by a second season in 2014. Dan Bucatinsky, who played Billy Stanton, Valerie’s frequently exasperated publicist, recently offered his perspective on the possibility of a revival.
“I would welcome bringing it back,” the actor, 59, exclusively revealed. “The topic comes up consistently. So, I remain hopeful.”

While the network has not formally confirmed a reboot, Bucatinsky, Kudrow, and the rest of the cast appear enthusiastic about the prospect.
Cast Members Eager for a Revival
“We discuss it frequently,” the “Scandal” alumnus admitted. “Even if active discussions are ongoing, I cannot confirm, but we consistently express our desire to revisit the show.”
The sitcom also featured Damian Young, Lance Barber, and Robert Bagnell. Robert Michael Morris, known for his role as Kudrow’s hairdresser Mickey Deane, sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 77.
“We collaborated extensively over the years,” Bucatinsky recalled. “However, working on ‘The Comeback’ stands out. One of my favorite scenes involved entering her trailer in Season 2, depicting Billy at his breaking point, ready to quit, and throwing his phone. That was a truly memorable moment for a publicist struggling to contain his frustration. We genuinely enjoyed filming that scene.”
Recognition for Kudrow’s Performance
Kudrow earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in both 2006 for Season 1 and 2015 for Season 2.
Michael Patrick King conceived the satirical comedy, which playfully lampooned reality television and the entertainment sector. Both he and Kudrow have openly discussed the potential for Valerie Cherish’s return.
“We occasionally meet to brainstorm ideas,” the director, now 70, shared in an interview. “Achieving the perfect confluence of conditions to inspire us both to create a truly compelling return for Valerie is key. We recognize Valerie could elicit laughter in virtually any situation, our ultimate aim is defining the specific scenario that would truly warrant her comeback. So, we regularly confer and contemplate various possibilities.”
Kudrow believes the show’s themes would resonate even more profoundly in the current landscape.
“It’s incredibly relatable,” the “Friends” star observed. “Every one of those Housewives, they understand their objectives; they assume specific personas to promote their brands, viewing it as a means to an end.”
Bucatinsky’s Career Aspirations
Beyond “The Comeback,” Bucatinsky has aspirations for diverse roles.
“I aspire to portray a villain,” he conveyed. “I envision playing a criminal, a villain, or even a cop. I am open to exploring morally ambiguous characters. The opportunity to further explore that spectrum is definitely appealing.”
Bucatinsky also has several actors he would love to work alongside.
Dream Collaborations for Bucatinsky
- Corey Hawkins (from ’24: Legacy’)
- Lisa Kudrow (longtime friend and partner)
- Kristen Bell
Bucatinsky recently participated in Season 4 of the acclaimed HBO series “Hacks,” featuring Jean Smart as Deborah Vance, a legendary stand-up comedian, and Hannah Einbinder, a comedy writer.
“The relationship I developed with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder was extremely rewarding,” the producer shared, reflecting on the most enjoyable part of joining the cast. “That friendship is something I value immensely. Connecting with them off-screen and then collaborating on-screen was a dream. On set I would make sure everyone was ok. I am a father of two, so I was playing dad a little bit on the show as well. Playing a role in that close-knit community, characterized by genuine camaraderie both behind and in front of the camera, was a genuine privilege.”
The actors spent much time together during filming.
“We would get together and just talk,” Bucatinsky recalled. “We would support each other. We would get tea. We would get snacks. We would ask each other for advice about everything. Recommendations of movies and documentaries and doctors. We helped each other through things. And talk about our kids and our pets. And it was really an opportunity in between scenes to really get to know one another.”
