A British vacationer is gravely ill and hospitalized in Greece after contracting what’s been identified as Legionnaires’ disease during an all-inclusive holiday. Authorities are investigating the source of this Legionnaires’ disease outbreak, and travel companies are taking steps to ensure customer safety.

Hull Woman Hospitalized With Legionnaires’ Disease in Crete

Donna Jobling, 57, from west Hull, was urgently admitted to intensive care at Venizeleio Hospital in Heraklion, Crete. The health emergency occurred during a vacation with her husband, Sidney, and friends, Paula and Nicolas Mason. She began feeling unwell on June 5 during their sunny getaway.

Sudden Deterioration and Emergency Treatment

Initially, Jobling experienced a chest infection, but her state declined rapidly by June 7, necessitating an emergency medically induced coma.

Legionnaires’ Disease Confirmed

Her niece, Claire, informed Hull Live that tests confirmed Legionnaires’ disease, caused by the Legionella pneumophila bacteria, as the reason for her sickness.

Understanding Legionnaires’ Disease

Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia according to the NHS, is acquired by inhaling minuscule water droplets harboring the bacteria. Sources can include improperly maintained air conditioning systems and hot tubs. In Jobling’s case, the illness manifested as acute respiratory distress syndrome accompanied by pneumonia, as shared by her family, who remain hopeful for her recovery.

Family’s Emotional Response

Claire, 42, conveyed the family’s distress: “We are all devastated and beside ourselves.”

She further explained the gravity of Jobling’s situation: “We were told her survival was uncertain. We are all praying for her. She is stable, but under close surveillance. We traveled there but had to return due to work and family responsibilities. I’m awaiting necessary paperwork to return as soon as possible.”

Family Support During the Crisis

Sidney, her husband and a former police officer, is staying by Jobling’s side. Claire described Jobling as “like a mother to us all.”

“The intensive care unit has strict visiting hours,” Claire acknowledged.

Visiting Restrictions

  • Visits are limited to 30 minutes.
  • She is receiving excellent care.

Holiday Companions’ Experience

Paula and Nicholas, who also enjoyed the £1,500-per-couple retreat, went back to Hull on June 12 and were shocked by Jobling’s unexpected illness. “The holiday began wonderfully. We enjoyed walking around everywhere,” recalled Paula, 52.

“Then, out of nowhere, she became incredibly sick. Though she already faces some health challenges, her condition worsened seriously, and the doctor insisted on immediate hospitalization and placing her in an induced coma within the intensive care unit.”

Travel Company Response to Legionnaires’ Disease Concerns

The origin point of the Legionnaires’ disease remains unclear. Easyjet Holidays, the travel provider utilized by the affected couples, is aware of the event and has offered alternative lodgings to present and upcoming visitors.

Easyjet Holidays Statement

A representative stated: “We’re deeply saddened to learn of Ms. Jobling’s illness, and we’re committed to assisting her and her family in every possible way. Immediately upon learning of the reported sickness, we promptly took action and contacted customers currently staying at the hotel, and those scheduled to arrive in the next month, providing them with alternative hotel selections.”

“We have also communicated with patrons who recently returned home from this hotel, providing them with required guidance. The safety and well-being of our customers is our utmost concern, and we will continue to provide necessary support.”
