UK pulls all staff out of Iran as fears of US attack on Tehran grow

Amid growing concerns about a potential conflict between Israel and Iran, and the possibility of U.S. military intervention, the UK has removed its embassy personnel from Iran. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is now advising against all travel to Iran due to the escalating situation. This decision underscores the rising tensions in the region and the British government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens.

UK Withdraws Embassy Staff from Iran Amid Rising Tensions

In a Friday announcement, the FCDO stated that all UK personnel in Iran have been evacuated and the embassy is now operating remotely. British citizens are strongly encouraged to “consider your presence” in Iran due to the risk of detention or interrogation. The FCDO emphasized, “Due to the ongoing security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily withdraw UK staff from Iran. Our embassy continues to operate remotely.”

Heightened Risk for British Nationals

The FCDO further noted that possessing a British passport increases the likelihood of questioning by Iranian authorities. The situation between Israel and Iran continues to intensify, with the US weighing potential military intervention.

The FCDO explicitly advises against any travel to Iran. For British nationals currently in Iran (residents or visitors), the advisory urges a careful evaluation of their presence and the inherent risks of remaining.

Specific Risks Highlighted by FCDO:

  • Significant risk of arrest, questioning, or detention for British and dual British-Iranian nationals.
  • Mere possession of a British passport or ties to the UK might be sufficient grounds for detention by Iranian authorities.

Due to the ongoing instability, the UK government’s ability to assist British citizens experiencing difficulties in Iran is severely limited. The FCDO warned, “UK government support is extremely limited in Iran. No face-to-face consular assistance will be possible in an emergency.”

UN Security Council Addresses Israel-Iran Conflict

This development coincides with a scheduled meeting of the UN Security Council in New York to address the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. UN Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned that the world is rapidly “racing towards” a major crisis if the current trajectory continues.

Guterres stated, “The expansion of this conflict could light a fire that no one can control,” and added, “Iran has repeatedly stated that it is not seeking nuclear weapons.”

“But let’s recognize there is a trust gap. I appeal for an end to the fighting and the return to serious negotiations.”

Evacuation Flights Arranged for British Citizens in Israel

Separately, the UK government has confirmed the arrangement of evacuation flights for British citizens from Israel. The Foreign Office has organized charter flights departing from Tel Aviv.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated, “As part of our efforts to support British nationals in the Middle East, the Government is working with Israeli authorities to provide charter flights from Tel Aviv airport when airspace reopens, based on levels of demand from British nationals.”

  • British nationals are advised to register their presence in Israel and the OPTs to receive updates about these flights.
  • Land routes out of Israel remain accessible, with UK staff available to assist British nationals crossing the border.
  • Assistance includes transportation to nearby airports for onward commercial flights, subject to demand.

“We continue to push for a diplomatic solution to avoid a deepening conflict,” Lammy added.
