The Role of Village Doctors and Buffalo Bicycles
Lucy Abalo is among numerous “village doctors” in rural Uganda who have recently received the Buffalo Bicycle. These bikes are specifically designed with reinforced steel parts to withstand the rigors of challenging terrains.
World Bicycle Relief, a Chicago-based nonprofit, champions the use of the Buffalo Bicycle in remote African regions. By partnering with governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), they facilitate improved access to vital health services.
Supporting Community Health Extension Workers
In Uganda, a nation of 45 million inhabitants, the focus of bicycle distribution lies in bolstering the efforts of community health extension workers (CHEWs) like Abalo.
As a CHEW, Abalo has cultivated the trust of her community. Villagers often turn to her in emergencies. Her responsibilities include:
- Serving approximately 8,000 individuals in her locality.
- Reporting to a government health center, located about 5 kilometers away, at least twice a week.
- Assisting with the triage of patients.
Addressing Transportation Challenges in Healthcare
Health authorities in Uganda acknowledge transportation as a significant obstacle for CHEWs. This issue is compounded by widespread poverty, which often leaves clinics without ambulances or the necessary resources to operate them.
Partnership for Progress: Buffalo Bicycles Uganda
Since 2023, World Bicycle Relief, through its local entity Buffalo Bicycles Uganda, has collaborated with Ugandan health authorities. Together, they have provided 331 CHEWs in two districts, including Lira, with these specialized bicycles.
The Buffalo Bicycle: A Durable Solution
While bicycles are common, the Buffalo Bicycle is a relatively new concept in the region, and its cost—roughly $200, three times more than a standard bicycle—puts it beyond the reach of many CHEWs who currently do not receive a salary.
Advocates emphasize the bike’s durability, reducing maintenance costs due to its ability to withstand challenging conditions.
According to Amuza Ali, a monitoring officer for Buffalo Bicycles Uganda in Lira, the robust steel frame of the Buffalo Bicycle comes with a five-year warranty.
While initially uncomfortable, CHEWs adapted to the Buffalo Bicycle, despite the braking system’s unfamiliarity.
Abalo commented, “When I climbed on it, it wasn’t that easy as I thought. I was like, ‘I am trying again to learn how to ride.’”
Impact on Healthcare Access
A study by World Bicycle Relief revealed that CHEWs using the bicycles reported a 108% increase in weekly household visits. Additionally, travel time to health facilities was reduced by nearly half.
“Mobility is not a luxury in healthcare,” stated CEO Dave Neiswander, “but a lifeline.”
Diana Atwine, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, advocates for the widespread distribution of bicycles to CHEWs throughout Uganda, recognizing their critical role in saving lives.
Real-Life Impact: Stories from the Community
Abalo received her Buffalo Bicycle from the health minister the prior year. Babra Akello, a neighbor, has already used the bicycle six times, including for antenatal checkups, expressing gratitude for Abalo’s assistance.
The bicycle has also proven invaluable in emergencies. In one instance, Abalo transported a neighbor’s injured child to a medical facility, potentially saving his life.
“That bike, not me, saved the life of that child,” Abalo affirmed. “If that bike hadn’t been there, I don’t know what would have happened.”
