Navigating the Den: A Haircare Entrepreneur’s Journey After Dragons’ Den Rejection
For any entrepreneur venturing into the Dragons’ Den, the prospect of pitching a brand-new idea to five highly accomplished business leaders is undeniably daunting. The pressure intensifies with millions of BBC viewers tuning in, eager to witness the high-stakes drama unfold. This was certainly true for one haircare entrepreneur who faced rejection but ultimately found success.
The Initial Pitch: Optimism Meets Scrutiny
Typically, contestants arrive full of hope, prepared to persuade the Dragons that their venture warrants significant financial backing in exchange for a portion of their company’s future earnings. However, the experience isn’t always positive; many participants have left disheartened after facing tough questioning from the show’s tycoons, who often expose flaws in their business plans.
A Contentious Encounter
One participant in 2017 experienced this firsthand, admitting to being reduced to tears after what she described as an “appalling” clash with Peter Jones, a seasoned Dragon, according to reports.

Nicola Wood’s Haircare Vision: Hair Made Easi
In spite of facing unanimous rejection from the Dragons, Nicola Wood from Bury, Greater Manchester, resolved not to allow the setback to derail her entrepreneurial goals.
- Nicola entered the Den with enthusiasm, eager to present her innovative haircare concept – Hair Made Easi.
- The 53-year-old identified an untapped market and developed Easiweft, a system designed to allow salon clients to easily wash, dry, style, and store their hair extensions.
- Her concept included a collection of specialized tools and accessories for extension wearers, along with essential salon items like combs and brushes.
The Financial Revelation and Dragon Disapproval
The pitch took a challenging turn when she revealed the financial details of her business, seeking an £80,000 investment to buy out her partner’s 50% stake, while also disclosing an operational loss of £14,000. Despite this, Nicola remained confident in her ability to recover those losses, citing increasing demand for her product.
The Dragons’ Rejection: A Turning Point
Offering 25 percent equity, Nicola faced skepticism from the Dragons, who showed no interest in her proposal.
Peter Jones specifically criticized her strategy of buying out her partner’s share, stating: “I don’t think that’s good Nicola, I think that’s appalling, that’s really really bad,” and consequently declined to invest.
Despite the negative atmosphere among the panel, Nicola left with a firm commitment to the Dragons: “I’ll just crack on and make it an amazing success.”
From Rejection to Riches: A Million-Pound Milestone
Despite the initial setback on Dragons’ Den, Nicola went on to prove her doubters wrong. In 2024, the entrepreneur and mother of two proudly announced that she had achieved her first £1 million in sales.
Reflecting on her Dragons’ Den experience, Nicola shared: “Dragons’ Den was an amazing experience, even though some of the comments were a bit harsh really, I cried when I came out of there.”
Nicola continued, “If I saw Peter Jones today, I’d probably shake his hand and say thank you very much for NOT investing. If they had invested I don’t think I’d be here now. I’ve achieved everything since without any external investment.”
Dragons’ Den airs this evening on BBC One from 8pm and is available to stream via iPlayer.
