According to Jassy, Amazon will “need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.” This acknowledgment was part of a comprehensive memo to employees, also published on the company’s website.
“It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,” Jassy elaborated. This statement underscores the predicted impact of AI on the company’s employment landscape.
Scale of Amazon’s Workforce

Warnings from AI Executives
- Last month, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei cautioned that executives and politicians should cease “sugar-coating” the potential for mass layoffs in sectors, including tech, finance, and law, and be candid with workers.
- Amodei anticipates significant job losses within the next one to five years, potentially leading to a U.S. unemployment rate spike to 20%, a considerable increase from the current rate of 4.2%.

Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg recently conveyed his expectation that AI will assume a more prominent role within Meta’s internal operations and workforce.
