Johnny Sexton Extends Olive Branch to Finn Russell Ahead of British & Irish Lions Tour
Johnny Sexton has affirmed his commitment to assist Finn Russell as a British & Irish Lions assistant coach. This declaration follows a reconciliation between the two after Sexton’s earlier remarks about the Scotland fly-half. The pair reportedly resolved any lingering issues during a recent meeting, paving the way for a collaborative environment ahead of the tour.
Clearing the Air After Previous Criticism
Sexton, a Lions tourist in 2013 and 2017, was notably absent from Warren Gatland’s 2021 squad. In his biography, he voiced his disappointment and labeled Russell a “media darling,” also describing him as “flashy” in a later interview. However, with Sexton now part of Andy Farrell’s coaching team for the upcoming tour of Australia, a potentially difficult reunion has transformed into an opportunity for cooperation.
The two players spoke briefly at the squad’s initial gathering last month, with Russell indicating that any misunderstandings were resolved. “We ended up having a laugh about the whole thing,” Russell commented, emphasizing his lack of animosity and a desire to move forward.

Sexton’s Commitment to Aiding Russell
Sexton insists he is ready to fully support Russell, who is favored to start at fly-half in the three-Test series against the Wallabies. Here’s how Sexton plans to contribute:
- Sharing his experiences
- Answering questions
- Offering assistance without being overbearing
“It’s probably been blown out of proportion, really,” Sexton stated. “I was talking about myself in 2021 and how I felt back then. And it was more really about what I thought Gatland was thinking as opposed to what I was thinking. But look, you have to deal with these types of challenges…We had a handshake and a brief chat.”
Focus on Team Unity
Sexton underscored the importance of unity within the Lions squad. “What the Lions demands of you is that if there is a rivalry – which there’s not, but if there was – you leave it at the door. I’m here to help him now…I’m here to answer questions…I’m here to help.”
Squad Updates and Training
Alongside Russell, Will Stuart and Ollie Chessum have joined the squad, as have 12 Leinster players after their URC final victory. Blair Kinghorn remains the only absentee from the 38-man touring party. Tadhg Furlong, recently returned from injury, participated in training, while Hugo Keenan, Jamison Gibson-Park, and James Ryan (recovering from an injury sustained on Saturday) sat out the morning session.
Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour, who provided cover at the Portugal training camp, are expected to return to England’s training camp. Henry Arundell, initially called into training, has been omitted from the England squad. Several players from Bath and Leicester, including Guy Pepper, have been selected following the Premiership final.
Owen Farrell’s Return to Saracens
Owen Farrell has rejoined Saracens after a season with Racing 92. He has signed an initial two-year contract and is expected to transition into a coaching role after Saracens agreed a compensation package.
