Tehran accuses Israel of seeking to expand conflict after attack on gas facility

Amid escalating tensions, Iran’s foreign minister has publicly accused Israel of attempting to broaden the scope of the ongoing conflict by targeting a significant gas facility in Bushehr province, situated along the Gulf coast. The accusation raises concerns about the potential for further regional instability and the security of natural gas supplies.

Iran Accuses Israel of Expanding Conflict

In his first public address to diplomats since the initial strikes attributed to Israel, Abbas Araghchi asserted, “Extending the conflict into the Persian Gulf constitutes a strategic miscalculation, with the purpose of drawing the war beyond Iranian borders. Any military escalation in this region holds the potential to impact the entire global community.”

Targeting of South Pars Facility

Araghchi’s remarks alluded to the assault on a facility operating within South Pars, an offshore site proximate to Iran’s southern Bushehr province. This field is a major source, estimated to supply approximately 70% of Iran’s domestic natural gas needs.

South Pars: A Vital Energy Resource

  • The South Pars/North Dome mega-field represents the world’s largest known gas reserve.
  • Iran has been developing its portion of the shared field with Qatar since the late 1990s..

Iranian media outlets reported a “significant explosion” and subsequent fire on Saturday. These incidents allegedly followed an Israeli drone strike targeting one of the South Pars installations.

Allegations Against the US

Araghchi further stated that Iran holds the U.S. accountable for allegedly enabling Israel to initiate hostilities with Iran. He added that, while the conflict is currently contained within Israel’s borders, Iran would maintain this containment by not extending it to neighboring countries or targeting U.S. installations.

“Over the past two days, we have received messages from the US through various channels claiming that they were not and will not be involved in this attack,” he said. “However, we do not believe this claim, because we have evidence to the contrary.”

“If the U.S. government really makes such a claim, it should clearly and publicly state its position. Sending a private message is not enough.”

Escalating Hostilities

Recent events have been marked by an increase in aggression. On Friday, Israel reportedly launched a large-scale offensive against Iran, resulting in the deaths of high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists, and causing damage to military bases, nuclear sites, and residential areas throughout the country.

In response, Iran has launched a series of retaliatory missile strikes targeting Israel. Reports indicate that at least 10 Israelis were killed overnight Sunday, with dozens more sustaining injuries.

“It is necessary for the U.S. government to clearly condemn the attack on nuclear facilities,” Iran’s leading diplomat said. “Such an action must be condemned from the perspective of international law.”

Diplomatic Repercussions and International Scrutiny

Araghchi attributed the cancellation of planned talks with the U.S. in Oman on Sunday to the aforementioned circumstances. He also defended Iran’s response to Israel’s attacks as acts of legitimate self-defense.

Moreover, he revealed that Tehran has requested an emergency board meeting of the UN nuclear inspectorate, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to address the Israeli attack on its Natanz nuclear facility.

He clarified that Iran had not initially intended to target Israeli economic assets, but was compelled to do so on the second day of conflict in response to attacks on its oil infrastructures.

Motives Behind the Attacks

Iranian foreign ministry sources suggest that Israel’s objective is a political regime change in Tehran. The sources suggest that European powers must consider whether they support such actions.

During his briefing in Tehran, Araghchi expressed gratitude to nations that condemned the Israeli attack. However, he criticized certain European countries, stating that instead of denouncing Israel, they have condemned Iran, despite professing to uphold international law.

He reiterated his request for an IAEA meeting following Israel’s attack on the Natanz nuclear facility.
