Grass Carp Biology and Distribution
Grass carp are substantial members of the minnow family, capable of reaching lengths of nearly 5 feet, as reported by the Invasive Carp Regional Coordination Committee (ICRCC) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
The ICRCC noted that mature grass carp, exceeding 10 years of age, can attain weights surpassing 80 pounds.
Invasive Species Background
- Grass carp are indigenous to eastern Asia, according to the USGS.
- The species was introduced to the United States in the 1970s for both human consumption and as a method for controlling algae overgrowths in wastewater and treatment facilities.
- Since their introduction, grass carp have become an invasive species, spreading to 45 states, as indicated by the USGS.
World Record Comparison
Alabama is among the states where grass carp have spread, and it is also the location where the world record for the largest grass carp taken by a bowfisherman was established.
The Bowfishing Association of America reported that in May 2015, Bryan Hughes captured a grass carp measuring 51.5 inches in length and weighing an astounding 92 pounds.
