Idaho Angler Lands Record-Breaking Grass Carp

A fisherman in Idaho made an extraordinary catch, reeling in a massive grass carp weighing almost 70 pounds. Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) authorities announced the impressive news on Tuesday, highlighting the significance of this remarkable feat.

Riley Farden, from New Plymouth, snared the enormous fish while bowfishing in the Snake River, a well-known and favored spot for fishing enthusiasts. His record grass carp represents a monumental achievement in angling.

State Record Shattered

IDFG officials confirmed that Farden’s impressive capture eclipsed the previous state record for the grass carp species.

The colossal carp tipped the scales at 67.65 pounds, surpassing the previous archery record for grass carp, which stood at 38.5 pounds. It also outperformed the rod/reel record for grass carp, which was 46.7 pounds.

According to IDFG, the record-setting carp measured roughly 49 inches in length and boasted a girth of approximately 33 inches.

Grass Carp Biology and Distribution

Grass carp are substantial members of the minnow family, capable of reaching lengths of nearly 5 feet, as reported by the Invasive Carp Regional Coordination Committee (ICRCC) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The ICRCC noted that mature grass carp, exceeding 10 years of age, can attain weights surpassing 80 pounds.

Invasive Species Background

  • Grass carp are indigenous to eastern Asia, according to the USGS.
  • The species was introduced to the United States in the 1970s for both human consumption and as a method for controlling algae overgrowths in wastewater and treatment facilities.
  • Since their introduction, grass carp have become an invasive species, spreading to 45 states, as indicated by the USGS.

World Record Comparison

Alabama is among the states where grass carp have spread, and it is also the location where the world record for the largest grass carp taken by a bowfisherman was established.

The Bowfishing Association of America reported that in May 2015, Bryan Hughes captured a grass carp measuring 51.5 inches in length and weighing an astounding 92 pounds.
