Air India crash: I’m a crash expert – this is my theory how seat 11A helped Brit survive

Importance Score: 75 / 100 🔴

Following yesterday’s devastating Air India crash near Ahmedabad Airport, which claimed the lives of hundreds, an aviation safety analyst is offering insights into the miraculous survival of a British national. The Air India Flight AI171 was en route to London Gatwick when it crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Reports indicate a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 individuals, including 53 British citizens, impacted a populated area exploding into flames as approximately 60 tons of jet fuel went up in flames.

The Sole Survivor: Vishwash Kumar Ramesh

Amidst the wreckage, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh emerged as the sole surviving passenger. Mr. Ramesh was traveling back to his residence in Leicester after concluding business matters in India.

Expert Analysis on Survival Odds

Given the severity of the incident, most aviation experts have characterized the crash as one with virtually no chance of survival. This raises significant questions about how Mr. Ramesh managed to survive.

Proximity to Emergency Exit

Professor Edwin Galea, Director of the Fire Safety Engineering Group (FSEG) at the University of Greenwich, offers potential explanations. His 2006 study indicated that, in survivable plane crashes, passengers seated within five rows of an exit have significantly increased odds of survival.

  • Mr. Ramesh was reportedly seated in 11A, situated immediately adjacent to the number two exit on the 787-8 aircraft.
  • “He occupied a seat in the closest possible proximity to an emergency exit,” Professor Galea commented, according to The Telegraph.

Seat Location within the Aircraft

Professor Galea further emphasized that the seat’s position within the structure of the airplane may have contributed to survival.

Wing Box Strength

“The wing box where the wings attach to the fuselage forms the physically strongest section of the aircraft due to its robust structural design,” he noted.

  • “Seat 11A is positioned just forward of this extremely reinforced section. This may have played a role in his survival.”

Mr. Ramesh’s Condition

Currently, Mr. Ramesh is recovering in a hospital from the terrifying incident. According to his brother, Nayan Kumar, Mr. Ramesh has no recollection of how he survived the Air India crash.
