Trump Discusses Potential Iran Nuclear Accord with Netanyahu
WASHINGTON — President Trump addressed his strategies for a potential nuclear agreement with Iran on Thursday, preceding discussions Friday in Rome that involved U.S. and Iranian representatives. The conversation took place amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a resolution.
During their discussion, Trump conveyed his condolences to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the deaths of two Israeli diplomats in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
Details of the Trump-Netanyahu Discussion
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated in a briefing that the leaders spoke “about a prospective accord with Iran, which the president is confident is advancing positively.”
“As the president indicated to me, and as he’s communicated to everyone, this Iran deal could conclude in two potential ways. It could culminate in a constructive diplomatic resolution, or it could lead to an adverse situation for Iran. Thus, these discussions are underway.”
Trump’s Stance on the Iran Deal
Leavitt noted that Trump and Netanyahu “share a robust rapport, founded on openness and mutual confidence.”
“The president has been explicit, not only with Prime Minister Netanyahu but globally, in his desire to achieve an agreement with Iran if viable,” she said.
“He prefers to avoid the latter, more detrimental, and severe option. He seeks an accord. The president is a negotiator, deeply committed to diplomacy, and he emphasized this to the Prime Minister, to all of you, and indeed, to the global community.”
U.S. Delegation to Rome for Iran Talks
Trump’s Middle East special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Policy Planning Director, Michael Anton, are scheduled to be in Rome for the fifth round of conversations between the U.S. and Iran. These discussions follow Trump’s directives for rigorous enforcement of sanctions, including on oil exports, aimed at depriving Tehran of resources for nuclear enrichment.
