Meta adds another 650 MW of solar power to its AI push

Meta, the social media giant, inked a major solar energy agreement on Thursday, procuring 650 megawatts from upcoming projects in both Kansas and Texas. This move underscores the growing demand for renewable energy to power data centers driving artificial intelligence (AI) operations.

Meta Secures 650 MW in Solar Power Agreements

AES, a prominent American utility and power generation entity, is currently developing the solar initiatives, allocating 400 megawatts to a Texas project and 250 megawatts to one in Kansas, the organization disclosed to TechCrunch.

Renewable Energy to Fuel Data Centers

Meta stated that this accord aims to energize its expanding data centers. These centers are crucial for supporting the company’s ever-increasing AI endeavors. The company’s renewable power holdings already exceed 12 gigawatts.

According to AES spokesperson Katie Lau, the company usually finalizes new power purchase agreements two to three years before commercial functionality begins, with an average commitment period of 15 to 20 years.

Meta’s Expanding Solar Portfolio in Texas

This marks Meta’s fourth announced solar venture this year. All are situated in Texas, with individual projects generating 595 megawatts, 505 megawatts, and two instances of 200 megawatts.

Texas: A Hub for Solar Development

Texas has recently become a significant focal point for solar development, leading the nation in newly established solar capacity for both 2023 and 2024, figures from the Solar Energy Industries Association show. The state benefits from:

  • Abundant sunshine.
  • Expedited permitting processes.
  • Rapid grid connections.

Advantages of Investing in Texas Solar Farms

The latter two factors are notably advantageous when introducing fresh solar capacity. With efficient permitting and grid hookups, a solar installation can be completed in a matter of months, rather than years. Moreover, newly constructed solar installations represent one of the most economical forms of new energy production, even before considering subsidies.

Phased Implementation

Furthermore, data centers don’t have to wait for total construction fulfillment, since solar farms can be deployed in stages. Electricity can be supplied even before the overall project concludes.

Indeed, in a recent statement, AES CEO Andrés Gluski emphasized solar’s “fast time-to-power and low-cost electricity” as fundamental qualities that have attracted significant players like Meta.
