Cherry debuts new mechanical, magnetic, and inductive switches with a whole new naming scheme to match

When discussing mechanical keyboard switches, the conversation often circles back to Cherry. Even when utilizing switches from alternative manufacturers, comparisons to Cherry’s nomenclature are prevalent. Descriptions such as, “These switches emulate the feel of low-profile reds,” are commonplace when characterizing a keyboard’s tactile experience. However, this paradigm is poised for a shift as Cherry is launching its innovative switches, accompanied by a revised designation system, at this year’s Computex.

Cherry’s New Switch Series

When examining Cherry’s new offerings, there are three distinct series to consider:

MK Series: Magnetic Precision

The MK Series showcases magnetic switches engineered for a seamless feel and precise actuation. These switches are marketed as exceptionally accurate for gamers, presenting a contrasting option to traditional mechanical switches by offering a frictionless experience.

IK Series: Contactless Efficiency

The IK series caters to users whofavor the contactless operation of inductive switches employing electromagnetic sensors. Cherry positions these as the most energy-efficient switches of their kind, consuming 50% less power than conventional magnetic switches and 5% less than Hall effect switches. Their contactless design ensures longevity, and their reduced power consumption renders them ideal for wireless keyboard setups used while traveling.

MX Series: The Evolution of a Classic

Finally, there’s the widely recognized MX series. These are the mechanical switches that Cherry is famous for, found in recent keyboards such as the MX 8.2 TKL Xaga. However, the MX range is also undergoing a revitalization, with Cherry introducing several new switches under this banner: the MX Honey, Blossom, and Falcon.

MX Honey: The Silent Tactile Option

The Honey switches are designed to be the quietest addition to the MX lineup. They represent Cherry’s first silent, tactile MX switch. Despite their quiet nature, they are engineered to deliver a pronounced tactile sensation, making them a suitable option for those in office environments including streamers, or anyone who appreciates quiet, yet satisfying keyboards.

MX Blossom: The Ultra-Light Touch

The MX Blossom switches are designed to offer an ultra-light feel. Evoking the imagery of falling cherry blossom petals that perfectly describe the intended experience. These switches are engineered to be incredibly light, effortless to actuate, and highly responsive, making them a likely choice for typists and gamers who appreciate a gentler touch.

MX Falcon: The Community-Inspired Tactile Switch

The Falcon switches represent a community-inspired design. These tactile switches are tailored for gamers and keyboard enthusiasts who desire immediate feedback upon key actuation. Offering a snappy and distinct response, these switches are poised to be a clacky, retro-inspired option. It’s the kind of keyboard you bring to the workplace if you want to disrupt your coworkers.

These switches are scheduled for release in June of this year. We will share our hands-on impressions as soon as possible.
