Netflix to Stream New ‘Sesame Street’ Episodes, Ensuring Broad Reach for Beloved Children’s Show
Netflix has extended a lifeline to “Sesame Street” with a fresh streaming arrangement. This deal provides the cherished children’s program a wider audience while preserving its longstanding presence on PBS, according to a joint announcement.
Simultaneous Release on Multiple Platforms
Starting later this year, new “Sesame Street” episodes will be available concurrently on Netflix, PBS, and the PBS Kids app. A specific launch date has not yet been disclosed. Additionally, a selection of previous episodes will be accessible on Netflix worldwide.
Shifting Landscapes for a TV Staple
This transition for the iconic, half-century-old show follows Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision last year not to renew its agreement for new episodes on HBO and Max, where the program had aired since 2016. However, episodes will continue to be available on those platforms until 2027.
Public-Private Partnership Ensures Accessibility
Sesame Workshop emphasized in a press release the collaborative nature of the new arrangement:
- “This unique public-private partnership will enable us to bring our research-based curriculum to young children around the world with Netflix’s global reach.”
- “…ensuring children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on public television to the ‘Sesame Street’ they love.”
Focus on Character Development and Emotional Well-being
Sal Perez, executive producer and Sesame Workshop vice president, recently mentioned that the latest season will feature expanded segments that are “really focused on character,” while also emphasizing the emotional health and growth of its young viewers.
Season 56 Format
The impending Season 56 episodes will center around single, longer narratives, each running approximately 11 minutes, as specified in the Netflix announcement.
“The more kids want to hang out with our characters on ‘Sesame Street,’ the more they’re going to take in those lessons,” Perez stated, noting planned updates to the program’s visuals and overall presentation. The season aims to explore the “Sesame Street” neighborhood further, including the famed brownstone at 123 Sesame Street, home to Elmo, Bert, Ernie, and others.
PBS Commitment to Educational Programming
Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, affirmed the organization’s dedication, stating:
“I strongly believe that our educational programming for children is one of the most important aspects of our service to the American people, and ‘Sesame Street’ has been an integral part of that critical work for more than half a century. We’re proud to continue our partnership in the pursuit of having a profound impact on the lives of children for years to come.”
Global Impact and Continued Relevance
“Sesame Street” has broadcast in over 150 countries. It has earned over 200 Emmy Awards, as well as Grammy and Peabody Awards, and a Kennedy Center Honor for artistic accomplishment. Its widely recognized characters, including Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, and Cookie Monster, will now be featured alongside other popular children’s programs. Netflix reports that “Kids and Family” content accounts for 15% of the streaming platform’s total viewership.
