Huge challenges await new president of divided Romania

Romanians have elected a new president, Nicusor Dan, often referred to as “Nicky” – a victory widely seen as a vote for change. This softly-spoken mathematician’s win represents a shift from the old political establishment amid concerns about nationalism and geopolitical alignment. The Romanian election saw voters opting for a pro-European future, highlighting the desire for stability and continued integration with the European Union.

A Vote for Change in Romanian Politics

Nicusor Dan, previously the mayor of Bucharest since 2020, was not widely known nationwide, making his presidential win primarily viewed as a protest against the established political order that has governed Romania for over three decades. However, his election also reflects a choice against more extreme alternatives.

Dan’s opponent, George Simion, a staunch nationalist and Eurosceptic known for his public insults, was defeated in the second-round vote. Simion’s controversial claims regarding Ukrainian and Moldovan territories, coupled with his ban from neighboring countries, fueled concerns among many voters.

While Simion led in the first round with 41% of the vote, Dan rallied in the second, ultimately securing the presidency. Political analyst Radu Magdin described the shift as “fear managed to defeat fury,” noting a significant surge in voter turnout.

According to Magdin, many Romanians are frustrated and desire profound change. This mobilization of the urban middle class reflects concern that the country might regress under Simion’s leadership.

Factors Influencing the Romanian Presidential Election

  • Desire for change
  • Concerns over nationalism
  • Geopolitical alignment

‘Romania First’ Rhetoric Fell Short in the Election

During the campaign, Simion garnered support from individuals drawn to his “Romania First” stance and promises of improved living conditions.

Liliana, a market vendor in Bucharest, expressed disappointment with the election outcome. Liliana and her husband voted for Simion, hoping he would be less susceptible to corruption.

Liliana voiced skepticism about Dan’s capabilities, suggesting that younger voters influenced their parents’ decisions, stirring up concerns that swayed the vote against Simion.

Mistakes that Impacted the Romanian Election Outcome

Simion’s campaign suffered from missteps that potentially alienated voters. An instance that stood out occurred when, attempting to speak French, Simion criticized President Macron and described France as being governed by “ayatollahs.”

Diana, a voter who had initially intended to support Simion, changed her mind after seeing the video, finding his remarks disrespectful to the French people. Analyst Radu Magdin also pointed to other errors, including aggressive online posts and Simion’s demeaning remark about Dan.

Magdin highlighted Simion’s focus on engaging with the pan-European radical right, suggesting that it did not resonate well with many voters.

Key Errors in Simion’s Campaign

  • Aggressive online posts
  • Offensive remarks and insults
  • Perceived alignment with radical right

Defiance of Russian Meddling in Romanian Elections

Dan’s election also signifies a stand against potential Russian meddling. During election celebrations, demonstrators chanted their defiance toward Russia, referencing alleged interference in the previous election aimed at boosting Calin Georgescu, a far-right conspiracy theorist.

Although Georgescu was ultimately barred from running, his perceived sympathy for Russia proved unpopular among many voters.

A Clear European Choice in Romania’s Future

Nicusor Dan’s victory extends beyond merely not being Simion. His supporters embraced his vision for Romania’s future within Europe. Many brought EU flags to his campaign headquarters, reflecting both relief and excitement.

Prior to the election, young voters voiced their intentions to take radical action if Simion emerged victorious. A politics graduate, Sergiana, expressed concerns that Simion’s leadership could jeopardize Romania’s EU membership. By contrast, Dan emphasized the importance of European relations in his campaign.

Another young voter, Petrosanu, highlighted the benefits of European integration, stating, “It’s better for the European way, for younger people, and for Romania – because we get more EU funds, more development… Also, Nicusor is the smartest guy since the revolution. He knows how to do things.”

A Critical Juncture for Romania

Despite Dan’s decisive win, millions of Romanian voters expressed different preferences. While expectations are high, the challenges are immense, and patience may be limited. Analyst Radu Magdin notes, “In my view, this is the last chance for the mainstream political class to win an election on a ‘Save Europe, Save Democracy’ platform.”

George Simion, at just 38 years old, remains a significant force, with his nationalist AUR party holding a strong presence in parliament.

Magdin cautions that another opportunity might not be granted if progress is not seen. “Next time, it’s ‘bye bye’ if these people do not do their job,” the analyst concludes. “Next time it could be somebody like Simion.”
