The manufacturer asserts that the results are significantly more accurate than those obtained by competing smartwatches that rely on wrist-based readings. The company states its technology is up to 50 times more precise.
This improved accuracy is attributed to the higher density of capillaries, the minute blood vessels employed to gauge vital signs, found closer to the skin on the finger compared to the wrist.
Daily Health Monitoring with the Huawei Watch 5
Users are advised to perform a brief, minute-long daily “health glance.” The device can then signal whether a consultation with a healthcare professional is warranted.
This smartwatch, priced at £399, delivers metrics related to:
- Oxygen levels
- Heart rate
- Stress
- Skin temperature
It also performs a basic electrocardiogram (ECG).
Furthermore, the device analyzes respiratory well-being, sleep-related breathing irregularities, and arterial stiffness – a key indicator associated with hypertension and cardiac ailments.
Smartwatch Market and Health Data
The multi-billion-pound smartwatch sector is fiercely competitive. Apple leads the way, with other prominent participants including Samsung, Garmin, and Fitbit.
The capacity to furnish comprehensive health insights, spanning from heart rate tracking and sleep pattern analysis to stress management, has played a vital role in the popularity of these devices.
While competitors such as Apple and Samsung provide similar functionalities to the new Huawei smartwatch, this is the first device to combine them within a single, one-tap evaluation.
The company maintains that testing using the finger boosts signal quality by a factor of ten to 50 compared to sensors placed on the wrist. However, there has not been any independent verification of these claims.
Expert Commentary on the New Technology
During the launch event, Professor Panicos Kyriacou, director of the biomedical engineering research center at City, University of London, commented that the smartwatch ‘unlocking a more accurate, faster and more complete and comprehensive health monitoring experience’.
Professor Kyriacou observed that medical-grade pulse oximeters predominantly utilize the finger due to its highly vascular nature, which ensures abundant blood flow. He emphasized the ‘importance of blood oxygen saturation in the times of COVID,’ and added that the feature would be particularly important for people with respiratory difficulties and heart failure.
Blood Pressure Monitoring Capabilities
The smartwatch can also estimate blood pressure, although these readings are not designed to be used in place of medical-grade blood pressure evaluations. However, Prof. Kyriacou asserted that the data supplied will be enough to reliably inform the user if they have hypertension and require a visit to their doctor.
Huawei’s Perspective on Finger-Based Sensors
Unveiling the watch, Andreas Zimmer, head of product at Huawei, said: ‘For the very first time, we have integrated PPG, ECG, and a tactile sensor into an all-in-one sensing module on the side of a smartwatch, working seamlessly with the sensors on the back.’
‘You might wonder, why put the sensors on the side? Well, because in some scenarios, readings from the fingertips are significantly stronger and more clear. For example, blood oxygen, which your doctor will measure at the fingertip.
‘Now for the very first time, we are bringing this principle into a smart watch,. With a gentle touch of the X-Tap, you’ll get a blood oxygen reading in just ten seconds comparable to traditional fingertip pulse oximeters.’
Huawei’s Recent Challenges in the UK and US Markets
Huawei has faced numerous difficulties in the UK since being prohibited from participating in the nation’s 5G networks in 2020 due to anxieties over national security.
In the US, the relationship has seen further challenges, including warnings from President Donald Trump to companies who used Huawei’s AI chips that they could be subject to criminal repercussions.
