Andy Brown, former lead vocalist of the boyband Lawson, known also for his past relationship with The Saturday’s singer Mollie King, has openly discussed undergoing intensive chemotherapy as he anticipates a stem cell transplant next week. The 38-year-old is raising awareness about his rare blood disorder, which carries the risk of developing leukemia. Brown, now a father to his son Knox, eight, and husband to Joey McDowall, has shared his concerns on social media as he prepares to rebuild his body “from scratch”. The stem cell transplant offers hope, but the journey ahead presents significant challenges.
Stem Cell Transplant: A Second Chance at Life
A stem cell transplant involves replacing impaired or diseased blood stem cells with healthy ones, typically sourced from a donor or the patient’s own cells. Brown noted his gratitude for “luckily finding a 100% matching donor”, but acknowledges the difficulties ahead for the musician.
Enduring Chemotherapy
Brown shared an image on Instagram, showing him in a hospital gown, connected to medical equipment in a hospital bed.
He wrote: “Day 4 of chemo done. It’s intensified significantly in the last couple of days, and I’m not feeling great, but there’s no avoiding it. Three more days to go, then the new stem cells go in next Tuesday!”
“I’m trying to stay positive, but it’s not easy. I’ve always been mindful of my health β ten years sober, clean eating, all of it. So, the effects of this chemo are hitting hard. But I understand it’s part of the process. It’s about acceptance, perseverance, and emerging stronger.”
The Challenge of Hospital Food
“Alsoβ¦ can we talk about hospital food? The food here is, to put it mildly, unappealing. Hospitals should promote healing, but the food provided seems to do the opposite. It lacks nutritional value. I recognize the immense pressure on the NHS, and this isn’t a reflection on the amazing staff caring for us. However, food is crucial for recovery. When I’m through this, I will advocate for improvements. Perhaps I can enlist @jamieoliver!”
The Importance of Stem Cell Donation
He further stated: “Next week marks the start of the real battle. The transplant will take place, and my body will begin rebuilding from the ground up. It’s a second shot at life β an opportunity not everyone receives. Compatible stem cell donors are scarce. You have the potential to save a little girl’s, a father’s life, or someone’s entire world. If you are healthy and eligible, please think about registering. It only takes a few minutes but can transform someone’s life like mine. This is merely another chapter. Nothing will deter me.”
Support from Friends and Fans
His emotional message drew supportive responses from fans and fellow celebrities. TV personality Laura Whitmore posted: “Thinking of you, Andy. You have got this.” Radio host Lucy Horobin added: “Thinking of you, Andy. Sending you lots of love and healing wishes!” Ryan Fletcher, Brown’s bandmate from Lawson, wrote, “You have got this. Keep at it.”
