Ben Fogle Invests Savings in UK Outdoor Clothing Company
Adventurer Ben Fogle has committed his life savings to his most audacious venture yet: acquiring Buffalo, a UK-based firm specializing in performance apparel for outdoor enthusiasts. The star of Channel 5’s “New Lives In The Wild” finalized the agreement last week to take ownership of the Sheffield factory.
A Risky Venture
For the 51-year-old, renowned for scaling Everest, rowing across the Atlantic, racing to the South Pole, and traversing the Sahara, this endeavor feels like a perfect fit. “I have invested everything I have into it. It’s undeniably a risk. Many businesses fail,” he admits. “However, I believe taking risks is essential, and I’ve truly put my resources behind this. I’m anxious, but also eagerly anticipating this new chapter.”
The author and broadcaster, recently returned from filming a travelogue in China for Channel 5, adds: “Reaching 50 often prompts people to explore new avenues. While some may separate from their partners—which I’m not doing!—others pursue career changes. I see this as a more practical midlife transition.”
Championing UK Manufacturing
Ben, who married Marina in 2006, and whose business partner is James Sleater, states: “I believe more individuals should support UK manufacturing and ensure brands like Buffalo remain here. Frankly, I could significantly increase my earnings over the next few years by moving production overseas.”
“The temptation is there for many. However, I made a firm pledge to the previous owners and the factory employees that we will not relocate. It’s a significant responsibility, especially considering the approximately 25 to 30 staff members. I anticipate numerous challenges in this new role.”
Mental Health and a Change of Pace
Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Express shortly after celebrating the acquisition, he revealed that his decision was partly influenced by a mental health episode in 2023. “Since my mental health scare, I’ve wanted to reduce my travel and spend more time domestically, slowing down a bit,” he explains. “I sought something to keep me engaged while remaining grounded.”
Reducing Travel Commitments
He continues: “My television work largely involves travel. I cannot sustain the current travel volume for various reasons: ethical, environmental, and sheer fatigue. I’ve spent 25 years traveling extensively, away seven months each year. I want to dedicate more time to my family. While I won’t completely abandon television, I intend to reduce my commitments. I still enjoy TV and documentary filmmaking; I’d rather focus on quality over quantity.”
Family Support
He notes that Marina, while also apprehensive, is enthusiastic about the venture: “She probably sees this as a safer option than climbing Everest—the only risk is financial rather than fatal!” He confesses to being a long-time admirer of Buffalo apparel, a staple among outdoor enthusiasts, military personnel, and rescue teams since he was 13: “Anyone who’s ever owned Buffalo kit has never parted with it.”
From Fan to Owner
- “I actually visited the factory about 18 months ago to acquire one.
- On a whim, I asked the owners if they ever considered selling, expressing my interest.
- Now, 18 months later, I own the factory.”
Ben resides in a £2.2 million home in Oxfordshire with writer and podcaster Marina, and their two children, Ludo, 15, and Iona, 13. However, he anticipates spending more time in South Yorkshire. “We will likely acquire a modest apartment, given that I’ve invested all my funds in the factory. I’m prepared to spend considerable time in a region offering excellent hiking, walking, and climbing opportunities.”
