HONOLULU — While traversing the Pacific with his feline companion Phoenix, Oliver Widger contemplated the appeal of his narrative to his expansive online following—over a million strong on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. His story centers around forsaking a conventional 9-to-5 job and embarking on a solo sailing voyage from Oregon to Hawaii, resonating with many seeking an alternative lifestyle.
The Allure of Escaping the Ordinary
“The current state of the world can be disheartening, and I believe many share my sentiments regarding traditional employment,” Widger, 29, conveyed to The Associated Press via Zoom. “Individuals can earn a substantial income, such as $150,000 annually, yet struggle to make ends meet. I believe many are weary of this cycle, desiring a means of liberation from relentless labor that yields insufficient rewards.”
Widger believes his broad appeal stems from embodying an escape, joining the increasing ranks of individuals undertaking similar maritime adventures in recent years.
Catalyst for Change
Four years ago, a diagnosis carrying the threat of paralysis precipitated a stark realization: he loathed his managerial position at a tire company, which mandated a clean-shaven appearance and formal attire. Inspired by tales of individuals sailing solo from California to Hawaii, he resolved to pursue a similar existence.
He abruptly resigned from his post, embarking on his ambitious project with “no savings, no strategy” and $10,000 in debt.
“Yet I was sure of one thing: acquiring a sailboat,” he stated. “My aim was to circumnavigate the globe.”
From Tires to Tides: The Transformation
He liquidated his retirement funds, self-teaching sailing techniques primarily through YouTube, and relocated from Portland to the Oregon shoreline. There, he dedicated months to overhauling the $50,000 vessel he had purchased.
Now, Widger is leveraging the reach of social media to finance his ambition of sailing around the world.
“Sailing with Phoenix”: A Social Media Sensation
Since initiating his voyage in April, followers have eagerly followed his “Sailing with Phoenix” social media updates. These chronicles feature videos of him and his feline co-traveler navigating through waves, contending with seasickness, savoring breathtaking sunsets, detailed boat maintenance, and reflections on life at sea.
Addressing his journey with the AP, a netted bag containing bottled water and snacks swayed vigorously above him, mirroring the boat’s motion.
He recounted memorable moments, including astonishment at dolphins’ agility and discovering flying fish on deck. He described prolonged periods without spotting any birds. Sleeping can be arduous amidst the vessel’s creaks and the jarring impact of waves, as can steadying a boiling pot for preparing his meals.
Challenges at Sea
- There were perilous junctures, such as a failed rudder that left the boat listing and the tedious repair process.
- One instance involved him accidentally locking himself within the engine room, requiring a wrench to escape.
Widger recognizes his relative lack of experience as a sailor, although he has implemented safety measures and various backup strategies, notably satellite phone and an emergency beacon.
Safety First: Coast Guard Perspective
Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Harms of the U.S. Coast Guard in Hawaii, though not an avid follower of Widger’s journey, expressed reassurance upon learning that Widger possessed an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, known as an EPIRB.
Harms emphasized the EPIRB as a vital tool for locating a mariner’s coordinates during maritime emergencies, mainly within the Pacific, given its vastness.
Widger’s trek serves as a salient lesson on maritime safety for the public. Harms stresses the importance of always wearing a personal flotation device while topside, closely monitoring conditions, and registering emergency apparatus such as the EPIRB.
“For individuals spurred by Widger’s narrative to inaugurate their oceangoing adventures, ensuring safety is key,” Harms stated.
Protecting Paradise: Animal Welfare and Environmental Consciousness
Prior to his anticipated arrival in Honolulu, Widger is meticulously managing every detail to avert Phoenix’s need to undergo Hawaii’s stringent animal quarantine. Widger stated arrangements are in place for a mobile vet to assess Phoenix’s health upon their arrival.
Though unaware of the deadly consequences of cat waste to the vulnerable Hawaiian monk seal, Widger ensured all waste, including kitty litter, remained onboard. Despite legal permission to discard it offshore, witnessing the ocean’s pervasive plastic pollution discouraged him from doing so.
Balancing Act: Social Media and Seafaring
Alongside the everyday practicalities of maintaining a vessel, he is concurrently managing the impact of going viral amidst the ocean, continually crafting social media content and considering merchandise requests from supporters.
He attributed his journey to a neck problem, which profoundly shifted his perspective and priorities. He hopes to act as an inspiration for others trapped in a monotonous routine.
“Everything I’ve managed felt unattainable,” Widger concluded. “Sailing around the world appeared an absurd dream. Irrespective of your ambition, pursue it relentlessly.”
