Luxury Air Force One? Qatar Offers Lavish Boeing 747 as Interim Presidential Jet
The Trump Administration has reportedly agreed to accept a $400 million Boeing 747 as a gift from Qatar, transforming the iconic Air Force One. This opulent aircraft boasts lavish amenities, resembling a luxurious palace in the sky. Offered as a temporary replacement due to delays with the next-generation presidential planes, this private jumbo jet offers a glimpse into a world of luxury air travel.
Inside the Flying Palace
This private Boeing 747 features:
- A master bedroom
- A guest bedroom
- Two full bathrooms with showers
- Nine lavatories
- Five small kitchens
- A private office
The Qatari royal family presented this extravagant private jet to President Donald Trump for use as an interim Air Force One. Despite being over a decade old, it’s far from a simple hand-me-down. This is essentially a fully furnished airborne mansion.
Lavish Interior and Amenities
The future Air Force One includes:
- Oversized couches and recliners
- Rich wood paneling
- More than 40 televisions, including 10 large screens
The jet accommodates approximately 90 passengers and 14 crew members. Previously, it served Qatar Airways’ division catering to royal families and government officials.
Boeing’s Delay Spurs Interim Solution
Trump has been awaiting the completion of the next generation of presidential aircraft by Boeing. However, the aerospace manufacturer has faced significant setbacks, falling behind schedule and exceeding budget.
The president announced on Truth Social his intention to accept the lavish gift, stating the Boeing 747-8 airliner will ‘temporarily’ serve as the interim Air Force One pending completion of the new American jets.
Uncommon Configuration
Unlike standard commercial 747s that can accommodate over 460 individuals, this modified jumbo jet contains only five rows of standard business class seating.
The remainder of the spacious interior has been remodeled to incorporate five lounges across the aircraft’s two main decks, connected by an elegant staircase.
It also offers modern conveniences, including live TV and radio, 13 Blu-ray players, and internet connectivity.
World-Class Design
According to Business Jet Traveler, this plane is considered one of the most lavish globally.
The interior, designed by the renowned French firm Alberto Pinto Cabinet, boasts ornate suites, staterooms, lounges, and dining areas.
Nearly every room features plush carpeting, leather furnishings, and gold accents.
The conference room provides tan and cream chairs with deep, adjustable cushions.
The aircraft’s corridors are lined with reflective, gold-toned walls reminiscent of Trump’s design preferences seen at properties like Trump Tower in Manhattan.
Security and Communication Upgrades
Once the 747-8 is transferred to the US Department of Defense, it will undergo a significant overhaul to ensure it meets the stringent requirements for the commander-in-chief.
L3Harris to Lead Refit
Defense contractor L3Harris has been selected to spearhead the jumbo jet’s refitting, integrating essential security and communication features necessary for Air Force One.
L3Harris, the sixth-largest defense contractor in the US, will equip the aircraft with advanced systems.
Air Force One: Size and History
Upon entering service, the 747-8 will be the longest passenger jet ever utilized as Air Force One, measuring 250 feet in length.
The current presidential plane has been in service since the 1990s, during the presidency of George H.W. Bush.
The anticipated completion date for the new Boeing model was 2024, but reported delays have pushed its debut to 2027.
Boeing’s Setbacks and Frustrations
The setbacks represent a major challenge for Boeing, which was chosen in 2018 to deliver two state-of-the-art planes to replace the existing fleet nearing 40 years of service.
Boeing’s delays on the six-year, $3.9 billion project raise concerns about completing the planes before Trump potentially leaves office after 2028.
Supplier issues and engineering complexities have extended the project timeline and increased its budget.
Reportedly, CEO Kelly Ortberg’s visit to the White House on April 18 did not alleviate the situation.
Enhanced Security Systems
Trump’s frustration led to the selection of L3Harris for refitting the $400 million gift from Qatar.
Advanced communications and defense systems are essential to prepare the aircraft for presidential use in emergencies.
The upgrades will provide the president with a mobile command center capable of critical decision-making during potential attacks on the US.
The plane will also offer protection against nuclear shockwaves in the event of global conflict.
From Luxury to Presidential Transport
AMAC Aerospace, a Swiss firm specializing in aircraft maintenance and refurbishments, transformed the 747-8 into a luxurious flying palace.
The company spent over two years installing custom features, releasing a detailed report of their work in 2020 when the Boeing 747 was offered for sale.
While the aircraft has spent the last decade transporting Qatari dignitaries, it is returning to its origin, having been originally built by Boeing in Washington state.
Performance Enhancements
The new aircraft offers enhanced range and speed compared to the current Air Force One, capable of traveling up to 7,730 miles at a top speed of 660 mph.
The existing Air Force One has a nautical range of 6,800 miles and a top speed of 644 mph.
