Drone Program Credited in Disarming Children in Albuquerque Incident
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The sheriff of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is attributing the department’s drone program to successfully disarming two young children, averting a potentially more serious outcome. The incident highlights the increasing role of drones in law enforcement and crime prevention.
Tense Standoff with Young Brothers
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office recently unveiled drone and body camera recordings illustrating a delicate confrontation in February with two young siblings, aged 7 and 9. In the footage, officers are repeatedly heard imploring the boys to relinquish the firearm.
“Put it down, baby,” one deputy is heard saying while other officers emphasize the necessity of continued communication with the boys.
Deputies employed a less-than-lethal round as a diversion before approaching. Sheriff John Allen noted that one of the children raised the weapon and attempted to fire, but it malfunctioned.
Critical Vantage Point
Allen stated that the drone provided a crucial elevated perspective, enabling deputies to evaluate the situation in real time. This real-time assessment aided them in securing the area safely and swiftly.
Focus on Support Services
No formal charges have been filed. Instead, authorities have focused on connecting the family with trauma therapy, medical assistance, behavioral support, and even providing prepaid grocery cards.
Prior Calls to the Home
Before responding to the report of children playing with a loaded handgun, deputies had been dispatched to the residence approximately 50 times concerning issues involving the boys and their family.
Complex Challenges Highlighted
Allen cited the February 16 event as an illustration of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement.
Addressing Juvenile Crime
“This case illustrates the complex intersection of juvenile crime, mental health and public safety,” Allen stated in a released statement. “We are taking important steps to close service gaps and expand our ability to work with juveniles involved in firearms or violent crimes.”
Statewide Concerns
New Mexico has experienced multiple instances of violence involving juvenile suspects, including:
- A fatal hit-and-run incident in Albuquerque.
- A shooting in Las Cruces in March that resulted in three fatalities and 15 injuries.
Prosecutors, law enforcement officials, and Republican legislators have urged Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to convene a special legislative session to address the state’s escalating crime issues.
