Sunbed Dispute Erupts: British Tourists Clash in Lanzarote Amidst “Sunbed Wars”

Tensions flared between two groups of British vacationers over a sunbed at a resort in Lanzarote, underscoring the ongoing “sunbed wars” across Europe this summer. The argument unfolded at the Hyde Park Lane apartments, a three-star establishment located in Puerto del Carmen, a popular destination in the Canary Islands.

Heated Exchange at Lanzarote Resort

Footage of the incident, recorded by another guest, Callum Lines, shows a woman in pink confronting another tourist, accusing her group of occupying sunbeds that her party had purportedly been utilizing throughout the week. The woman in pink threatened to escalate the issue to the hotel management, sparking a tense verbal dispute. The sunbed occupant replied, “You’ve picked on the wrong person. Turn around and walk away.”

Guest Commentary on the Sunbed Incident

Lines, 31, from Leamington Spa, could be heard labeling the woman in pink a “Karen” during the confrontation.

He later remarked, “There were ample unoccupied sunbeds – all with similar sun exposure – making the dispute unnecessary. People come on holiday to unwind and relax.”

Lines added that a sign near the pool explicitly prohibited reserving sunbeds, although it remains uncertain whether the policy was enforced.

The woman in pink then accused the other party of moving her group’s belongings. The woman on the sunbed vehemently denied this, telling her to get her facts straight. A male guest nearby told the woman in pink to “go away”, while another holidaymaker attempted to mediate.

Resort Staff Response

Mr. Lines recounted that the woman subsequently sought intervention from the hotel staff; however, no manager appeared during the incident.

  • No police involvement.
  • Hotel declined to comment.

“Sunbed Wars” Extend to Tenerife

Meanwhile, in Tenerife, similar scenes unfolded as tourists attempted to secure prime sunbed positions even before the loungers were made available. At several popular resorts, guests have been observed laying out towels, flip-flops, and beach bags on the ground hours in advance of the daily sunbed placement.

A “Military Operation” for Sunbed Reservations

“It’s like a military operation out there,” one social media user posted. “People are literally reserving tiles.”

Several destinations have now enhanced measures and reinforced existing rules regarding sunbed reservations.

  • Rules are in place.
  • Enforcement Varys.
