Studies indicate that pervasive hygiene poverty affects approximately four pupils in every UK classroom. Nationally, 14% of children grapple with this issue, with 20% regularly lacking essential items such as toothpaste or deodorant each month. Efforts are underway to combat this often-overlooked crisis affecting children’s well-being and school attendance.

The Impact of Hygiene Poverty on UK Children

The report “A Clean Start in Life,” a collaborative effort by Charity In Kind and Children North East, uncovers that about 350,000 children have been absent from school due to a lack of clean school attire. The findings also demonstrate:

  • One-fifth of children experiencing hygiene poverty avoid social gatherings due to fear of ridicule.
  • One in ten has been subjected to bullying because they lack necessary hygiene products.

Michael Gidney, Chief Executive Officer of Charity In Kind, voiced profound concern, stating, “Children are sharing toothbrushes, worrying about standing out at school for the wrong reasons and families are having to choose between eating and keeping clean – impossible choices no one should have to face.”

He further explained, “In addition to online surveys, direct conversations with children across England revealed that hygiene poverty is adversely affecting their childhoods, and no one should feel ashamed to seek help.”

‘Not a Choice’ Campaign Launched to Address the Crisis

The charity has initiated the “Not a Choice” campaign at the Bluewater shopping center with the purpose of heightening awareness about this hidden crisis. Shoppers using the Bluewater restrooms will hear stories from children directly impacted by these challenges, providing a poignant narrative of their experiences.

The campaign, designed to raise awareness of hygiene poverty, will continue until May 11th. Gidney commented, “By amplifying the voices of children and real experiences in the shopping center restrooms, we hope to create a moment of reflection for visitors before asking them to help us end hygiene poverty.”

Key Findings from the Research

A study involving over 1,000 children, aged 6 to 15, revealed that:

  • 26% of those living in hygiene poverty suffer from diminished self-esteem.
  • 17% feel embarrassed and ashamed due to their circumstances.

Additionally, the research highlighted that:

  • Almost one-fifth of children struggling with hygiene challenges have had to share personal care items, such as toothbrushes.
  • 16% have had to wear the same clothing for extended periods.

The report also integrated insights from face-to-face discussions with 103 children and young people, aged 5 to 18, to thoroughly understand their first-hand accounts of hygiene poverty.

Children North East’s Role in the Research

These interactions, arranged by Children North East, took place in different regions, including the North East, East and West Midlands, London, and the South West. Venues included schools, colleges, and youth and sports clubs. The purpose was to gather comprehensive insights into the struggles of those affected by hygiene poverty.

Leigh Elliott, CEO of Children North East, noted, “The shame and stigma attached to wearing a dirty school uniform or having greasy hair can be an unbearable burden for our children and young people.”

She added, “This research, along with our Poverty Proofing consultations with thousands of UK pupils, reveal that an increasing number of children are facing this reality.”

Hope for the Future

Elliott believes providing families with the resources to rise out of economic difficulty can safeguard the well-being of young people. Lifting families out of poverty serves as a preventative measure, protecting vulnerable young lives.

“Every baby, child and young person should be able to live a happy, healthy childhood, yet children have told us hygiene poverty is impacting their mental health and school attendance,” stressed Elliott.

“Children North East is proud to have worked in partnership with In Kind Direct to conduct this research with children and young people, and we hope their voices will drive meaningful change in combating hygiene poverty.”
