Reddit’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Huffman, has demarcated two primary types of individuals who frequent the social media site: perusers and inquirers.
Perusers are those who engage with Reddit’s central offering, participating in community dialogues and discussions on subjects that captivate them, ranging from r/sourdough to r/popculturechat. Meanwhile, inquirers are users who might input a specific question into Google Search, appending “Reddit” to the end to find authentic advice and viewpoints from fellow users.
Reddit Answers
Reddit Answers, the platform’s AI-driven chatbot that extracts precise answers and concise summaries from established Reddit posts, caters to the needs of inquirers. Remarkably, initial findings indicate that it is already experiencing notable popularity.
Strategic shifts
”Until recently, we had not developed a product tailored for them,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman remarked during the company’s first-quarter earnings conference on Thursday. “These users are not visiting Reddit in search of a community at that particular moment. They are seeking an answer. We can acknowledge the problem the user is bringing us and be more effective in addressing it.”
Reddit divulged during the call that its Answers feature already boasts over 1 million weekly active users since its beta launch in December. Last month Reddit extended the Answers feature beyond the U.S., to Australia, the UK, Canada, and India.
Integration Plans
As of now, the feature, still in its beta phase, is located in the app’s navigation bar as a standalone experience. Looking ahead to next year, Reddit intends to incorporate Answers more seamlessly into the platform in several innovative ways.
Search Functionality
One apparent method to execute this would be by embedding Answers into the main search bar. This enhancement would allow users to input a comprehensive query rather than just a few keywords.
The executive added that the company is examining methods to integrate Answers at the outset of the user experience.
User Onboarding
“Imagine you’re a newcomer opening Reddit for the first time, utilizing Answers to explore what Reddit offers and understanding that Reddit almost certainly has the information you’re searching for,” Huffman explained.
External Search Integration
An additional “point of entry” for Answers could be through external search, “assisting users in acquiring a more summarized or easily digestible version of the answer on Reddit,” Huffman elucidated.
Manoeuvres for Independence from Google Search
This strategy could also shield Reddit from being overly reliant on Google Search. In the fourth quarter of 2024, a Google Search algorithm update triggered some “instability,” with Reddit’s user growth, alarming investors at the time, despite surpassing earnings predictions.
“We advocate for an open platform, encouraging users to discover Reddit content via search,” Huffman noted. “Openness fosters awareness and visibility. However, it can also introduce variability, and we anticipate potential fluctuations from Google, as we have observed a few already this year. Such variability is to be expected in any given year, but considering the Search ecosystem is undergoing significant transformations, the near term could be more tumultuous than usual.”
p class=”wp-block-paragraph”>Reddit’s stock surged in post-market trading as the company outpaced analyst earnings expectations and reported robust user growth. The company reported $392.4 million in revenue, representing a 61% year-over-year increase, an adjusted EBITDA of $$115.3 million , and 108.1 million daily active unique users, a 31% year-over-year rise.
For the second quarter, Reddit forecasts revenue between $410 million to $430 million and an adjusted EBITDA in the range of $110 million to $130 million.
