Meta, informed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday’s Q1 earnings conference call, revealed that WhatsApp has surpassed 3 billion users each month. The widely-used messaging platform is pivotal for Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI) strategies and revenue streams.

WhatsApp’s Rapid Expansion

Established in 2009, WhatsApp was obtained by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014. The app remains cost-free and devoid of advertisements. WhatsApp hit the 2 billion monthly active users milestone in 2020, and now stands among the select few apps to exceed 3 billion users, alongside Facebook.

WhatsApp’s Crucial Role for Meta

WhatsApp’s vast user base is essential for Meta, particularly with the company’s ongoing focus on AI initiatives. Meta has previously indicated that WhatsApp serves as one of its primary channels for delivering AI services.

Meta’s Chief Financial Officer, Susan Li, shared insights during the conference call, “We observe users interacting with Meta AI through various points of entry. WhatsApp leads in Meta AI engagement across our suite of applications.” Li added that, for WhatsApp users, engagement with Meta AI predominantly occurs in one-on-one conversations.

Challenges in the U.S. Market

Despite WhatsApp how Meta provides straightforward access to AI capabilities, Zuckerberg indicated that the company must adopt a distinct strategy to encourage the adoption of AI products in the U.S., where many users still favor built-in messaging apps. This is the context in which Meta’s newly launched standalone Meta AI application is significant.

“We aim to become the leader in the long term in the U.S. messaging market. Our standing in the U.S. differs from most other regions concerning WhatsApp,” Zuckerberg stated. “The standalone Meta AI app will be vital in establishing leadership as the primary personal AI tool in the United States. However, we will continue to enhance experiences across all platforms.”

Revenue Growth from WhatsApp Business

Meta reported that the business platform within the chat app, WhatsApp Business, is flourishing and contributed significantly to the $510 million in revenue generated by its family of applications.

Meta has been experimenting with AI tools for WhatsApp Business. On Wednesday, Li announced the development of a new AI agent management interface and dashboard, enabling businesses to train Meta’s AI using their own data. This information can encompass a business’s website, WhatsApp profile, or their Instagram and Facebook pages. Additionally, Meta is testing the activation of its AI chatbot in customer conversations.
