UN demands that Israel lift aid blockade on Gaza Strip

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher on Thursday urged Israel to end a siege that has been hindering relief efforts from accessing the Gaza Strip for nearly two months.

Pressing Demand for the Release of Captives

“Indeed, the abductees should be set free immediately. They ought never to have been separated from their loved ones,” Fletcher stated.

Call for Compliance with International Laws

Fletcher further emphasized, “However, international law is clear: Being the occupying authority, Israel must facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance.” He stressed that aid must not be used as a “negotiating tool.”

The Devastating Impact of Aid Restrictions

Consequences for Civilian Populations

  • Denying relief causes harm to civilians.
  • It deprives them of essential medical care.
  • It robs them of dignity and hope.
  • It imposes a harsh collective penalty.

“To the Israeli officials and those who can still engage in dialogue, we reiterate our plea: end this punitive blockade. Permit humanitarian workers to rescue lives,” Fletcher appealed.

The Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Israel has impeded the delivery of relief supplies to the Gaza Strip since March 2. Over 2 million residents in the besieged coastal enclave continue to face severe hardship following more than 18 months of continued conflict.
