However, meteorological authorities must pump the brakes on celebrations of this potential record.

Data from the weather station in the park were invalidated due to an anomaly at the site. The issue? Temporarily installed public restrooms, barriers, and generators near the weather station for upcoming VE Day anniversary festivities obstructed crucial airflow needed for precise readings.

Official Response

“We have suspended data collection from this weather station until the site is restored to an acceptable condition,” stated a Met Office spokesperson, Britain’s weather service.

The Met Office operates a national network of over 200 automated weather stations, each monitoring various meteorological parameters, including air temperature, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, wind speed and direction, humidity, cloud cover, and visibility.

Ensuring consistency and precision across these measurements is vital for both real-time forecasting and maintaining the nation’s long-term weather and climate data. As a result, weather stations must adhere to stringent international criteria, making it standard practice to have readings withdrawn or reviewed if necessary.

Air temperatures are recorded 1.25 meters above ground within a Stevenson screen, a ventilated white enclosure designed to protect instruments from direct solar radiation. Ideal locations for this equipment are flat, unimpeded by nearby obstructions such as buildings or trees, which could skew readings.

Reported Temperatures and Official Records

Although the station at St. James’s Park recorded a high of 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28.1 degrees Celsius) on Thursday, this reading was deemed invalid for official records. Meanwhile, another Met Office site at Kew Gardens, just a few miles away and free from obstacles like restrooms, registered the same maximum temperature early Thursday afternoon. This officially marked Britain’s warmest May 1 on record. Temperatures continued to ascend later in the day, with a preliminary reading of 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29.1 degrees Celsius) in Surrey, just southwest of London.

St. James’s Park Weather Station History

Established around 1883, St. James’s Park is a long-standing Met Office station and is frequently among Britain’s warmest locations. In July 2024, the station recorded a high of 89 degrees Fahrenheit (31.7 degrees Celsius) during a heatwave that triggered widespread health advisories across England.

Regional Temperature Records

Temperature records were also shattered elsewhere this week.

On Wednesday, Met Éireann, Ireland’s national meteorological service, announced a preliminary high of 79 degrees Fahrenheit (25.9 degrees Celsius) in Athenry, County Galway. This surpasses the country’s previous April record of 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.6 degrees Celsius), set in 1984. It was only the second time temperatures in Ireland exceeded 77 degrees Fahrenheit during the month of April.
