Transgender women banned from women’s football in England as FA explain reason why

Following a Supreme Court verdict in April, the Football Association (FA) has enacted a prohibition on transgender women participating in women’s football. This interdiction is scheduled to commence on the first day of June.

Policy Reversal and Supreme Court Ruling

Presently, transgender women are permitted to engage in women’s football upon submitting a form to the FA. However, in light of the Supreme Court’s determination that the legal conception of a woman is predicated on biological sex, the FA has opted to reassess its regulations. The FA described the issue as a “complex matter” and asserted it is reaching out to registered transgender women to assist them in “continuing their involvement in the sport.”

The FA’s Explanation and Legal Framework

The FA elaborated on its choice in an official declaration: “As the overseeing body of the national sport, our duty is to render football available to the greatest number of individuals feasible, operating within the bounds of the law and international football policy as defined by UEFA and FIFA.”

“Our current policy, which grants transgender women the opportunity to participate in women’s football, was grounded in this principle and bolstered by expert legal counsel.”

“The matter is one of complexity, and our stance has consistently been that any substantial alteration in law, scientific understanding, or the execution of the policy in grassroots football would necessitate a review and potential modification.”

Implementation and Supporter Assistance

The declaration went on: “The Supreme Court’s ruling on April 16 necessitates a shift in our policy.”

“Transgender women will be precluded from participating in women’s football in England, effective June 1, 2025.

We comprehend that this development may prove challenging for individuals who merely aspire to play the sport they adore, aligned with their self-identified gender. Consequently, we are contacting registered transgender women actively engaged in the sport to elucidate the changes and afford them avenues to sustain their involvement.”

Government Response

In reaction to the Supreme Court’s verdict, Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer stated: “A woman is an adult female, and the court has made that unambiguous.”

During a subsequent interview, he elaborated: “I endorse the court’s decision and ruling. I believe it is crucial that we now possess genuine clarity, which will be beneficial for everyone moving forward, particularly those tasked with implementing guidance.”

He further noted: “And to reaffirm something I fervently desire, which is about secure spaces for women. That has always been of paramount importance. And so, it is encapsulated within the ruling as well. Therefore, I welcome it in its entirety.”
