A Kenyan legislator has been fatally shot in Nairobi, the country’s capital, by assailants on a motorcycle in a suspected political murder. Police officials stated that the assailants had pursued Charles Ong’ondo Were’s vehicle before opening fire at close range.

“The characteristics of this offense suggest it was both intentional and premeditated,” police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga declared in an official statement.

The opposition lawmaker had previously raised concerns about threats to his life, as reported by local media outlets just two months ago.

Collective Shock Following Fatal Attack

Late on Wednesday, following the shooting, Were’s unharmed driver and bodyguard rushed him to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Attack Location and Investigation Details

The incident occurred along Ngong Road near a bustling intersection, where traffic police officers station and numerous security cameras are typically monitored. Following the attack, senior law enforcement officers and detectives visited the crime scene, initiating an active investigation.

President William Ruto has directed the police to undertake a comprehensive probe into the incident, emphasizing that “the culprits must face justice.”

Political Reactions to the Violent Incident

Colleagues who visited the scene expressed disbelief and fury over the killing, demanding rapid inquiries and accountability.

Speaker of the Parliament Moses Wetang’ula remembered Were as a “bold and esteemed” lawmaker, labeling his murder “heartbreaking.”

Legislator’s Political Affiliation

Were represented the Kasipul constituency in western Kenya as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement, led by veteran politician Raila Odinga.

In Odinga’s statement, he denounced the killing, asserting that the legislator was “brutally and callously murdered by a gunman.”

“We have lost a valiant patriot!” Odinga lamented.

Political Power Dynamics in Kenya

Odinga lost to President Ruto in the 2022 election, alleging electoral malpractices. The former prime minister subsequently reached a political agreement with Ruto, leading to some opposition members joining the cabinet in an arrangement dubbed the “inclusive government.”
