Explore the captivating world of Beyond Paradise, the gripping murder mystery series from the BBC, where Kris Marshall takes the lead role as Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman. Alongside his team, DI Goodman is committed to addressing the crime riddles that plague the imaginary town of Shipton Abbott. This enthralling production is a spin-off of the acclaimed Death in Paradise series and provided an absolute treat to viewers with beloved detective Goodmen’s inclusion in a fresh UK cast.

Unravelling Humphrey Goodman’s Unconventional Preferences

Beyond Paradise not only introduces viewers to DI Goodman’s investigative prowess but also sheds light on his personal struggles while navigating his marriage to Martha (portrayed by Sally Bretton). Particularly noteworthy is Goodman’s penchant for milk at the workplace, a trait that has sparked curiosity among fans. Why does Goodman choose milk while his colleagues rely on coffee to power through their demanding jobs?

Marshall finally disclosed that Goodman’s preference for milk is a deliberate homage to 1970s American crime drama, Barnaby Jones.

Inspirations Behind DI Humphrey Goodman

In a recent conversation, the actor shared insights into his past, identifying the American sleuth as a major influence on his character. Buddy Ebsen’s portrayal played a significant role in shaping Goodman’s persona:

“I drew inspiration from a range of iconic figures including Jane Marple Jim Rockford, Barnaby Jones, and Columbo. None of these characters were defined by harmful vices or concealed secrets.”

Marshall elaborated on his approach to the character, stating:

“We’re dealing with a comedy-drama, so I strive to infuse Humphrey with elements from all the classic detectives whom I admired growing up.”

The actor also hinted at subtle nods hidden within the series, declaring them as private references, but appreciative of any audience who picks up on them. He mentioned Goodman’s fondness for milk as one such subtle homage to Detective Barnaby Jones.

The Townsfolk of Shipton Abbott Encounter Trouble

The mystery surrounding the fearsome Shipton Abbott escalated in episode five when local farmers experienced havoc orchestrated by an individual disguised as the legendary Cornman. This villainous figure not only contaminated the farmers’ milk supply but also started fires and released livestock onto the roads, upping the stakes and creating a potential risk to the town’s inhabitants. Particularly, detectives entertained notions of feuding between the Ellises and a close by farm.

As the episode unfolded, social media users took to voicing their apprehension, warning others that the eerie storyline could induce “nightmares”.
