Residents of Majorca are outraged by a tourist apartment situated right in the heart of the city, capable of housing up to 20 individuals. In 2018, Palma implemented a comprehensive ban on tourist apartment rentals within its boundaries.
Mainland Stay Restrictions
The measure, backed by a Supreme Court verdict, permits only legally approved holiday rentals inside the city, which are limited to detached homes with valid tourist rental permits in designated zones. Nevertheless, one conspicuous tourist apartment has managed to evade detection, with locals labeling it a “mini hotel,” according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin. This address is located on a thoroughfare connecting Plaza de España, a highly frequented plaza and the primary transportation hub for Palma’s bus and train services, and La Rambla, a scenic tree-lined boulevard.
Discreet Tourist Accommodation
The apartment, lacking a key box, makes no effort to conceal its tourist-oriented operations, as it is listed on Airbnb. Locals report that the owner and his father personally welcome visitors, negating the need for a lock box.
Neighborhood Concerns
“There are numerous illegal rentals along these streets,” one neighbor stated. “But it seems no one is taking any action.” Local official is actively inspecting properties for irregularities.
The Airbnb listing highlights its desirable location, with complimentary coffee and pizza offerings. Guests bound for the seaside can avail themselves of a beach umbrella, swim goggles, and a cooler.
Accommodation Facilities and Pricing
The nightly rate for the apartment varies between €65 and €95. If fully occupied for a month, the property could potentially generate up to €48,000 in revenue.
However, visitors staying in the centrally located apartment have been surprised to discover that, despite having five numbered bedrooms, it features only one bathroom.
Guest Feedback
One review reads: “We were unaware that there were five rooms in total, accommodating up to four people each, with just one bathroom available.”
“I counted 14 guests at one point! And just one bathroom and toilet!”
